Make Lip Balm with Petroleum Jelly

Always have chapped, bleeding, hard lips? Turn them into healthy soft lips by following this easy and fun recipe on how to make your own lip gloss instead of using money to buy your own.

Steps

  1. Scoop a spoonful of petroleum into a microwaveable bowl. Stir, then flatten with the bottom of the spoon.
  2. Put the bowl in the microwave for about 30 seconds, depending on your microwave. Make sure your Microwave is on high.
  3. Remove the bowl. Stir once more, then flatten it with the bottom of the spoon.
  4. Microwave for another 30 seconds (on high).
  5. Add half a teaspoon of the flavoring. Stir rapidly until well blended.
  6. Put mixture in a small container.
  7. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  8. Enjoy your new sweet smelling lip balm!

Alternative Method 1

  1. Scoop some petroleum jelly with a knife into the middle of the big spoon. Don't put it near the spoon edges or when you melt it it will drip off the sides.
  2. Slice off a piece of lipstick and put it on your spoon beside the petroleum jelly.
  3. Do the same with the ChapStick.
  4. Preheat the hair straightener for two minutes.
  5. Slide the spoon under the straightener and rest the handle against something tall.
  6. Mix gently every few seconds with your stick.
  7. Remove the spoon from the heat source when the mixture is completely melted. Mix well and remove any lumps.
  8. Pour mixture into container. Let cool before using.

Alternative Method 2

  1. Combine all oils and beeswax in a glass bowl.
  2. Melt in microwave for about 30-60 seconds. Swirl the bowl to mix oils and wax.
  3. Add extract to mixture and swirl again.
  4. Pour into container. Use a spoon to help you if need be.
  5. Let sit for about 1/2 hour without lid.
  6. Soothe your lips with homemade lip balm.

Tips

  • Add oils, honey, vitamin E, or Shea butter. If your skin is sensitive, make sure your ingredients are gentle.
  • For an extra quick cooling of lip gloss, pop in the fridge for five minutes, then take out and hold at room temperature for three minutes.
  • Make lots of these and give them to friends. Use different flavours and colours.
  • For a weird flavor, you could flavor with an extract (vanilla, orange, etc.).
  • Apply this lip gloss whenever your lips feel dry and cracked, or slather some on when you go out.
  • Try mixing some sugar and olive oil, rubbing it on your lips, washing it off and then putting this lip balm on.
  • After you pour the lip gloss into the container, quickly sprinkle a bit of glitter on top before it hardens. Then you'll have glittery lip gloss!
  • Try decorating the top of your container with stickers. Hearts, flowers, lips, lipsticks and stars are good for symbolising lip glosses.
  • Don't get ridiculous colours for lip gloss such as blue, green, silver, dark purple, golden, etc. Get suitable colours for the lips such as light pink, dark pink, red, light purple and orange.
  • Old lipsticks work well for colouring your lip balm, if you use new ones it is just wasting it.
  • Make sure you don't make the mixture too runny while heating it because it will take longer to set.

Warnings

  • Be very careful with the straightener - it can be very hot. Also, you could get electrocuted with a metal spoon under the straightener, so be very careful.
  • Don't ignore the steps and make sure the lip gloss has cooled before you use it—otherwise it will still be too liquid for use, and it can be quite hot.
  • If you are totally cautious about germs, wash your hands before sticking your finger in and putting on your lips. Or use a lip brush.
