Make Nappy Hair Look Wavy

Have you ever washed your hair and the next day you couldn't wear a ponytail because your hair looked dry and kinky?

Steps

  1. Wash and condition your hair and let the conditioner sit for 15 minutes.
  2. Rinse hair with warm water and then switch the water to cold for a few seconds.
  3. Towel dry your hair by squeezing the excess water from your hair. Don't rub the hair too much.
  4. Add a small amount of silicone hair de-frizzer to hands and distribute through wet hair.
  5. Use a hair dryer set on warm and dry the hair a little to get out the excess water but leaving the hair moist.
  6. Use a smoothing gel or an extra hold gel and apply to semi-damp hair from roots to tips.
  7. Use a wide tooth comb to get a good distribution of the gel.
  8. Add a little mousse in the back for shine.
  9. Brush into a ponytail or leave down which ever you choose. If your hair is shoulder length or longer, it might be better to do a ponytail, because gel will get on your collar and shirt.
  10. Take the braided tail and get a little gel on your hands, and rub it on, braid it put a shower cap on your head and try not to bother it, so that your ponytail will be neat.
  11. The next day take off the cap wet your hands and run them over the braid.
  12. Loosen the braid and shake it to give it that natural wave look.

Tips

  • If you choose to wear your hair down, don't put much gel at the ends, or it will stain your collar or shirt.
  • Treat your hair to a deep conditioning or hot oil treatment once a week.
  • Before going out take a dry paper towel and wipe your ponytail, so that gel won't rub off on anything.
  • A little conditioner will add a great smell and more waves!!
  • For really kinky hair, try combing it out in the middle to make it look longer than it really is.
  • Try sleeping with your wet hair in foam curlers. The curlers will help control the curl.
  • Avoid 'Volume or Volumizing' shampoos, conditioners, gels, mousses, etc. as they will cause your hair to become frizzy.
  • Scrunchies are best for longer and drier hair.
  • Use more than three rubber bands or else they will break!
  • Go over hair with an anti-humidity hair spray and more silicone based de-frizz serums to control the fine hairs at the nape of your neck and around your ears.
  • Make sure to make your ponytail exceptionally tight to keep split ends hidden.
  • Make sure you are using a shampoo and conditioner for your hair type.

Warnings

  • Never go swimming while having your hair this way.
  • Always wash hair at least 2 days after using this method!
  • Never use rubber bands on dry hair.
  • Always brush your hair thoroughly.
  • Put grease on your edges so that they won't break off because of the gel.
