Make Unleavened Bread

Unleavened bread is bread made without leavening agents (ingredients that cause fermentation to occur) such as yeast, baking soda, baking powder and beaten egg whites. Unleavened bread is of great significance in Christianity, used in the sacrament of Holy Communion, and mentioned in the Bible as being eaten at the last supper Jesus shared with his disciples, and in many other books of the Bible. Often churches rely on a person in the congregation who knows how to make unleavened bread to bake it for significant church holidays. ( one can add and/or substitute, increase accordingly, recipe quantities, when adding ground Oats, Rye, Buckwheat, soy or other ground pulse flour.)

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons butter or cooking oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2-cup water or milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Steps

Make the Unleavened Bread

  1. Combine the dry ingredients (flour and salt) in a mixing bowl and mix them together.
  2. Beat together the eggs and oil, then add this mixture to the dry ingredient mixture.
  3. Add the milk, then beat the mixture for 2 to 3 minutes until it is relatively smooth.
  4. Pour the batter into three greased, 8-inch, square baking pans.
  5. Bake at 450 degrees for 20 minutes.

    • The day after the Passover became the First Day of Unleavened Bread, the beginning of seven Days of Unleavened Bread. The first and seventh days of this stretch were considered holy, and believers would congregate and give offerings to God.
  2. Celebrate Biblical history with your unleavened bread by recognizing the seven Days of Unleavened bread.
    • This period of time was so sacred that the Israelis had to rid their homes and properties of any leaven during the time. Those who considered themselves people of God were required to eat unleavened bread every day of the seven-day stretch.

Tips

  • To avoid sticking, use a cooking spray that contains flour or sprinkle flour in the pans after they have been sprayed. Do not use cooking spray that does not contain flour by itself, as this will cause the loaves to stick.
  • Check the bread frequently as it is baking. Over-baked unleavened bread becomes extremely hard and crumbly.
  • To add some different flavors to your unleavened bread, add 1/4 cup honey or a pound of cheddar, Colby or Pepper Jack cheese to the batter.
