Make Vegan Hot Dogs

Vegan hot dogs not only effectively mirror the taste of a grilled, juicy hot dog straight from the ballpark, but they're also healthy and nutritious alternatives. They can be dressed up just as a hot dog can, and are perfect for barbecue events with vegetarian or vegan guests.

Ingredients

Servings: 8 hot dogs

  • 1/4 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/4 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1/4 tsp mace
  • 1/2 tsp black mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp ground coriander
  • 3/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp fresh garlic, minced
  • 1 1/2 tsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 cup onion, peeled and finely chopped
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 9 oz, 255g firm tofu
  • 5 tbsp almond meal
  • 1 cup, plus 1 tbsp, wheat gluten
  • 1 tsp arrowroot

Steps

  1. Prepare all ingredients.
  2. Add all of the ingredients except the gluten and arrowroot into the blender or food processor. Process until the mixture is completely smooth.
  3. Transfer the processed mixture into a large bowl and stir in the wheat gluten and arrowroot with a wooden spoon.
  4. Place the dough on a clean surface, and divide it into 8 equal portions. To make sure the dough is divided equally, divide it into two pieces first, then divide each piece into two more pieces. Finally, divide each of the 4 quarters in half, resulting in 8 equal pieces.
  5. Mold each portion into a toastie roll shape similar to that of a hot dog. To mold the portions into sausages, roll them out on the board with each of your hands.
  6. Wrap each hot dog in parchment paper.
  7. Wrap each hot dog again in aluminum foil and twist the ends of the foil into a tootsie roll shape.
  8. Steam the hot dogs in a steamer for 45 minutes.
  9. Unwrap each hot dog and let cool.
  10. Plate and serve.
