Make Wire Bookmarks

If you enjoy love making gifts for your friends and family, creating wire bookmarks with a beaded tassel decoration is a great gift idea that will not only be beautiful but practical as well. They're easy to make and a great way to recycle leftover wire from craft projects. Make a few and you'll have them spare for gifts at any time you might need them.

Steps

  1. Assemble the "Things You'll Need" (see below). The thick wire is used to make the bookmark; the thin wire is used for the tassel.

Bookmark

  1. Bend the thick wire piece carefully, using pliers. Create a bookmark design of your choice (see "Tips" for ideas). Leave approximately 2 inches (5 cm) unbent and without a design.
  2. Hammer the wire design flat. Do this carefully, in small, repeated knocks. Try to make it as flat as possible, as this is the part that will sit inside the book.
  3. Bend a loop shape out of the unbent 2 inches (5 cm) of wire that you left while making the design in step 1.

Tassel

  1. Take the piece of thin wire. Bend one end of this into a small loop so that the beads can't slide off.
  2. String the beads on. Leave about half an inch of wire unbeaded, as this will be the part that you attach to the thick wire of the bookmark.
  3. Bend this section of thin wire around the loop that you created on the thick wire of the bookmark. This forms the beaded tassel that dangles off the bookmark.
  4. Give as a gift, or enjoy it for yourself.
  5. Finished.



Tips

  • Design ideas for the bookmark include: spirals, circles, triangles, simple animal outlines, star shapes, moon shape etc. Think of the shapes that cookie (biscuit) cutters have - these are very simple and something that you could easily follow for a bent wire shape.
  • Use glass beads for a more elegant look.
  • If you are very creative, you may want to include some ribbon in the design.

  • Be careful with the hammer and wire!

  • Approximately 8 inches (20 cm) of thick (craft) wire
  • 2 1/2 inches (6 cm) of thin (craft) wire
  • Hammer
