Make Yogurt Parfait

A yogurt parfait often contains some of breakfast's major staples: yogurt, granola, strawberries and blueberries. A great thing about parfait is its versatility. You can make it however you choose! It is one of breakfast's most delicious meals, and the best part is it's easy to prepare. Children and adults will love this good-tasting, easy-to-make treat, with the added benefit of it being healthy.

Ingredients

Yogurt parfait:

  • One cup yogurt, your choice of flavor
  • Fruit, strawberries, blueberries, peaches, etc. (optional)
  • Granola
  • Cereal (optional)
  • Fruit jam or marmalade (optional)

Pack-a-punch yogurt parfait:

  • 2-3 tablespoons yogurt, flavored or Greek style, plus extra
  • Chia seeds, goji berries, flaxseed (whole or ground), mixed together
  • Cinnamon, ground
  • Blueberries (other berries can be substituted)
  • Muesli or granola
  • Dark chocolate

Steps

Yogurt parfait

  1. Locate and organize your ingredients. You'll find the ingredients in a list above. The great thing about parfait ingredients is that it is completely customizable. Keep them in a place near each other on your work station.
  2. Place the glass in the middle. You'll be putting the ingredients in this container, so try to keep it near the food items. Chill this glass beforehand in the freezer or fridge. This makes the food cool and keeps it fresh.
  3. Add quarter cup of yogurt. Don't add all of the yogurt yet; you still need room in the glass for the other ingredients. At this point you may add any other ingredients to the parfait. It is your choice; this is what makes a parfait so unique. You can add strawberry jam for some sweetness, cereal, oatmeal, granola, fruit, or whatever else you like. Be sure to leave some room in the cup for the final step.
  4. Add the other three fourth of a cup of yogurt. You want to have more yogurt on the top then on the bottom. If you have too much on the bottom all of your cereal and fruit will sink and get soggy in the yogurt. I recommend using plain yogurt so the real flavor of the ingredients come out but if you want to intensify the taste of the fruit then add a flavored yogurt. You can substitute a flavored yogurt for a fruit. Serve the dish fresh, preferably right after you have prepared it. If you don't like I said the granola or cereal will get soggy.
  5. Finished.

Pack-a-punch yogurt parfait

  1. Place 2-3 table spoons of yogurt of your choice into a long glass.
  2. Add the chia seed, goji berry, flaxseed mix to the yogurt. Add the ground cinnamon and the blueberries. (You can make modifications to make it to your taste, such as adding banana, apples, strawberries, etc.)
  3. Add another dollop or two of yogurt.
  4. Add muesli or granola of your choice.
  5. Add more of the chia, goji, flaxseed mix in a smaller amount.
  6. Shave some dark chocolate on top. Enjoy your healthy snack.
  7. Finished.

Tips

  • Try chilling the glass or bowl before adding the ingredients. It is easy to do (about 30 minutes in the fridge or 10 minutes in the freezer should do it) and it keeps your dish cold for longer.
  • You don't have to use a glass. Try parfait in a bowl, or maybe on a dish. It's all about personal preference.
  • To cut down on the sugar, use plain yogurt. If plain yogurt is too tangy for you, add just a bit of sugar to the cut up fruit and let it rest a little while to blend. You can make your own yogurt parfait as sweet (or not) as you want.
  • Try breaking up some cookies or putting sprinkles.
  • Don't stir the ingredients.
  • Organization is key!
  • If you want you can put some granola on top to make it like very country. If you like crunchy you can put sprinkles or whatever you want - you can add honey if you have a sweet tooth. Know it's going to be a very very healthy snack!

Warnings

  • As with any food that has to be chilled, make sure the yogurt is properly stored and is served fresh.
