Make Your Own Clothes

Do you have a style all your own, but just can't seem to find it in stores? Wish you could make your own clothes? Now you can in just a few steps.

Steps

  1. Learn the basic skills of sewing.
    • thread needles
    • Sewing pieces of fabric together using different stitches
    • Understand how clothes are put together
    • Operate a sewing machine
  2. Once you learn how to sew, build your skills. You can do this by learning to hem, patch, sew on buttons, and add extra panels. This will help you build confidence in your skills which is important to making decisions while making your clothes.
  3. Advance. When you feel that your skills are good enough try some elementary patterns. Go to a local fabric store to get a sense of what is available. There are usually large books of photographs that you can look through, depicting the different types of patterns that are available. Patterns range from simple to really complex, but many lines of patterns have a special series for beginning sewers and others who like quick and easy projects. Pick out something you like that is on your skill level and read the back of the package to figure out how much fabric and what other items you will need to complete your project.
  4. Once you successfully complete your first pattern, try a few more. Try a more complicated items like fitted shirts and pants. Do what you feel comfortable with. Don't make anything that you won't wear.
  5. Draw your own patterns. You can make any clothes that you want to by using existing patterns or changing them a little to make it more original. Once you feel comfortable you can try to make your own patterns.
