Make Your Own Dollhouse Furniture

Store bought doll furniture can be really expensive nowadays! Read this article on how to save money, and make your own unique dollhouse decorations! (This article is for making a doll bed, a table, a TV, and chairs) (This article is designed for barbie dolls or dolls smaller, like Barbie little sisters, or others)

Steps

Table and chair

  1. Take the circle cardboard and paint it any color to suit your tastes. Stick to the one color palette. Let dry.
  2. Cut 4 pieces about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} long off the bendy straw, depending on your dolls' height.
  3. Glue the pieces on the bottom of the painted cardboard, two in the front, two in the back, placed evenly about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} from the edge.
  4. Paint the finished table white as a primer, let dry.
  5. Paint it with assorted colors if you like to add your own personality and flair to it.

3 chairs

  1. Take one empty soap box and cut off the front large panel with scissors, so now it is like a little bed.
  2. Cut off the two smaller panels on the sides, so if you turn the box on its side, it makes a 'L' shape.
  3. Paint the 'L' white. Let dry.
  4. Just like the table, take a bendy straw and cut 4 pieces about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} in length.
  5. Glue the 4 straws to the smaller bottom side of the 'L', one straw on each corner.
  6. Paint the legs of the chair white. Let dry.
  7. Once it's dry, paint it assorted colors to add your own flair.

Bed

  1. Take a strip of cardboard and paint it white. Let dry.
  2. Now take another straw and cut 5 pieces this time, about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} in length each.
  3. Glue one in each corner, and one in the middle of the board.
  4. Make sure the outer straws are at least {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} from the edge of the board.
  5. Paint the legs of the bed white.
  6. Paint the bed assorted colors to give it personality.
  7. Take the 2 cotton balls and glue them together, creating a pillow.
  8. If you want, take a small piece of fabric and stuff the cotton balls inside, then closing off the edge to make a fancier and decorative pillow.
  9. Put your doll in bed, lay her head on the pillow, and use the other piece of fabric as a decorative blanket!

TV

  1. Take another empty soap box, and cut a square in the front, large panel of the box. Do not cut off the whole panel, just make a rather large 'window' in it.
  2. Paint the box white. Let dry.
  3. Take a paperclip and straighten it out.
  4. Bend it to the shape of a 'V'.
  5. Put the 'V' inside the box with the window, and poke it through the top of the box and keep pushing it up until the paperclip comes thru mostly all the way, but the bottom of the 'V' is still inside the box.
  6. Glue it in place so it can't move. You just made antennas for your TV!
  7. Take your picture of your cartoon and glue it on the inside of the window you made, showing the cartoon in place of the window hole like a TV screen.
  8. Paint the box the color of your choice, except do not paint the 'TV screen' (the cartoon) and do not paint the antennas.
  9. OK, now glue the beads on the side next to the cartoon.
  10. Glue the beads on the side so it looks like the TV buttons/controls.
  11. Arrange your new doll furniture pieces in your dollhouse and let your little doll enjoy!

Tips

  • Don't be afraid to get creative with your furniture! It's your furniture, you do what you want.
  • Pill bottles can be really useful.
    • Glue pill bottle caps together that ascend in size, with the largest being on the bottom, for a table. The tops of the caps can be facing either way, but if the tops are facing down, then you can put more items in the table.
    • Use a small pill bottle as a trashcan or storage bin.
    • Glue small caps with the tops facing outwards onto the walls and put pictures or reflective material inside of them for pictures and mirrors.

Warnings

  • Don't add too much paint, otherwise the cardboard will sag and get soggy.
  • Let the paint dry really well before you continue your work.
  • Really you should paint on one thin coat of paint of any color that you'd like

Things You'll Need

  • To make a table and 3 chairs, you will need 4 empty individual soap boxes, 4-6 bendy straws, a piece of cardboard the size of a small saucer, white paint, paintbrush, and glue
  • To make a bed, you need a strip of cardboard a little longer than your doll is wide by {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}}, one bendy straw, white paint and paintbrush, two cotton balls, and a piece of fabric about the size of your doll.
  • To make a TV, you need an empty individual soap box, white paint, 3-4 different colored beads, and a large paperclip
  • Assorted paints, in whichever colors you like
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • A picture the size of the large front panel of a soapbox
