Make Your Own Finger Paints

When you want to make your own finger paint rather than buying it, you'll be glad to know it's actually very simple to do at home. In this article, you'll be shown a few ways to make finger paint at home, each using non-toxic, easily available ingredients.

Ingredients

Method 1: Flour and Water Finger Paint

  • Flour
  • Water
  • Salt
  • Food coloring of choice (or watered-down tempera paint)

Method 2: Cornflour and Soapflakes Finger Paint

  • 2 cups cornflour
  • 1/4 cup soap flakes (fine)
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 4-5 cups boiling water
  • Food coloring of choice

Steps

Flour and Water Finger Paint

  1. Mix equal amounts of flour and water depending on the amount of paint you want.
  2. Add in some salt. Put more if you used more flour and water and vice versa. Mix it again.
  3. Add some food coloring drop by drop because the color is very intense and can get very dark easily or use watered-down tempera paint.
  4. Paint on the paper using your fingers. There is no right way in finger painting. Just have fun!
  5. Store the rest of the paint in an airtight container so you can reuse it.
  6. Done.

Cornflour and Soapflakes Finger Paint

This thickened finger paint should maintain its shape briefly when using, pouring slowly and allowing for molding or pattern creating when making finger paint pictures.

  1. Whisk the cornflour and cold water together in the large bowl. Continue stirring until all of the cornflour is suspended.
  2. Pour in the boiling water while stirring. Continue to beat until the mixture thickens. Once thickened, add the soap flakes and stir through.
  3. Stir thoroughly. Stir until the mixture turns smooth and translucent. It should stay thick.
    • If the mixture seems too thick, add a little more water, with care.
  4. Pour the finished paint into the containers set aside. Add the food coloring in small amounts until desired color is achieved. Stir to distribute evenly.
    • Color can also be added to finger paint when on the painting table, although this can be a bit messier to do, especially if supervising children at the same time.
  5. Store paint for up to one week in a sealed container. Keep in a cool spot, away from direct sunlight.
  6. Done.

Tips

  • Adding more salt will give a different feeling in the paint.
  • Try several different colors together on the same paper.

Warnings

  • Do not let pets eat the paint.
  • Use food coloring, especially if your child doesn't understand not to eat the paint (6 years and younger).
