Make a "Grass Head"
This traditional childhood activity is still as popular as ever and many kits are sold in various shops. Still, it's a lot easier to go for the cheaper option and grow from scratch. Grass heads are a great activity for the kids in the holidays!
Steps
- Roll down the pop-sock and sprinkle in the grass seeds.
- Tip the compost in.
- Gently press into a rough spherical shape and twist and elastic band around the opening to close it.
- Knead into the preferred shape (remember that the head must sit on top of the rim of the cup). If you want you could add ears and a nose by separating small areas of soil with small elastic bands. You could add felt glasses etc., but remember that PVA glue is unlikely to stick when the soil is damp. Spread the seeds so they are roughly even.
- Pour an inch of water into the cup.
- Sit the grass head on rim with the excess sock hanging in the water. The moisture will gradually work its way up the fabric. The grass should start growing within a week!
Tips
- Placing on a sunny windowsill will make the grass a deeper colour and generally healthier.
- When the "hair" begins to droop or split, it's a good idea to cut it - but don't get carried away! Whilst cutting it will encourage the grass to grow, if you cut it too short it might stop altogether.
- Refill the water regularly.
Warnings
- Grass heads do not survive very long outside.
- Don't leave them in the sun
