Make a 4 Strand Braided Bracelet

Making your own braided accessories is fun, easy, and very inexpensive. We’ll show you how to make your own 4-strand braided bracelet using embroidery thread.

Steps

  1. Choose your colors. You can have any number, from 1 to 4. 2 colors is pretty easy to work with, but have fun and be creative. You can use muted tones for an earthier look, or bright colors for a more festive feel. For this example, we’ll use black and blue strands.
  2. Cut the strands to size. To fit your wrist when finished, the strands should be slightly longer than the distance from your wrist to your elbow. You need 3 strands of thread for each main strand. Separate them into groups of 3 strands per color, like this:
  3. Secure one end of the strands. Tie all the strands into a knot at one end, and attach it to something secure, such as a monitor or a dresser drawer. You can safety pin it to your jeans, tie it to your toe, or tape it to something, as long as it will stay put while you work.
  4. Start braiding. Turn the blue strands to the inside, and cross the left strand over the right strand. It should look like this:
  5. Now cross the black strands. Cross the right black strand over the right of the blue strand, and then cross the left black strand over the right blue strand.
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you reach the desired length of your bracelet. This is what it should look like close up:
  7. Tie it off with a knot. Cut off the excess string, but leave a little bit on each end so you can tie it on.
    • If you make it a little larger, it also works as an anklet!
  8. Finished.

Tips

  • Choose interesting color combinations for unique and beautiful bracelets. You can use as many different colors as you have strands, so let your imagination go wild.
  • Remember, its better to have too much excess string than not enough!
  • For a thinner bracelet, use less string, or for a thicker bracelet, use more. You can also use thicker string to start with, or combine thick and thin for an interesting look.
  • The bracelet pictured here was loosely braided. Depending on your preference, you can braid yours as tightly or as loosely as you would like.
  • You can add beads in between every couple braids.
  • If you want to just be able to slip it on your wrist without any fuss, then measure the bracelet so that it is just a little bit bigger than your wrist.
  • If you don't feel like taping the strands, just wrap another around them tight enough so that it stays, but should be loose enough so that you can take it off when you are done.

Warnings

  • Don't use tape on anything expensive that you will not be able to remove the tape from, such as hardwood floors, expensive computer desks, antique wood, etc.

Things You'll Need
