Make a Cheap Masquerade Mask

Masquerade masks are often hard to find, and when you do find them, they are more than likely expensive. Here is how to make a cheap, but great looking masquerade mask.

Steps

  1. Get a plain mask. This is the simplest and most obvious thing to do. You can find these on the cheap either on the Internet or in your local arts and crafts stores. Search for "plain mask" or "domino mask" to find what you are looking for. There are often different designs, such as full face masks, half masks (such as The Phantom of the Opera) or eye masks. An eye mask is probably what you want.
  2. Paint your mask. This is obvious too. Paint it whatever colour you want, whether it is to match your outfit or to be really funky, have fun with it!
  3. Add components to your mask. You can now decorate your mask, which is the most fun bit. You can add feathers, gems, diamante, glitter, whatever you fancy to make your mask unique and beautiful. Good ideas are putting three feathers of the same color on the top of your mask fanning out. Then hide the stalks with a brooch, flower or whatever you can find that looks pretty. You could put a large feather (such as a peacock or ostrich feather) on either side of your mask, swooping up to look elegant. Other ideas are using glitter to make swirly patterns on the mask or putting gemstones or diamante on each side of the eye holes. The only limit is your budget (but a lot of these things can be found on the cheap) and your imagination!
  4. Securing your mask.If your mask already has elastic on, then you are set to go. If not, you can either make holes on either side of your mask and slotting elastic through them and tying knots to secure them, or you can glue a stick, pole or chopstick to one side of your mask for a hand held mask.
  5. Wear your mask with pride! Your mask is now ready to be worn, and it didn't cost a bomb! With how cheap it was, you can afford to make more, either for parties, hobbies or you could even make a business out of it! People need somewhere they can buy pretty, yet inexpensive masquerade masks as not everyone can afford $70 per mask.

Tips

  • Try drawing up a plan or design for your mask. This way, you know what you are doing with your mask and will have less chance of screwing it up.
  • Leave enough time for everything (paint, glue, etc.) to dry.
  • Stock up on supplies beforehand.

Things You'll Need
