Make a Joey Jordison Slipknot Mask

Joey Jordison, acclaimed drummer of the nu-metal band Slipknot, is known (beyond his percussive skills) for his distinctive image. In public appearances with the band, Jordison wears a Japanese Kabuki-style mask, purportedly modeled after one his mother would wear when he was a child in order to frighten him. Many devoted fans sport replicas of the mask, typically purchased through fan sites. But by following the simple steps below, you can make your own unique replica for a fraction of the cost.

Making Your Own Joey Jordison Mask

  1. Visit your local arts and crafts shop for supplies. You'll need a blank white mask, made of plastic or papier mache, and either acrylic paint or permanent markers, in black and red.
  2. Trace the design with a pencil or washable marker, using the picture above. If you don't trust your freehand skills, try a few practice-runs on a piece of paper first. When you feel you've got the hang of it, draw directly on the mask.
  3. Fill in the design with paint or permanent markers. Notice that the markings are black with a red border. There are two ways to achieve this effect:
    • Fill in the whole design with red paint or marker first, and let it dry. Then, cover the red layer with black paint or marker, but leave a red border intact. Or,
    • Fill in the whole design with black paint or marker, and then add a red border once the black layer is dry.
  4. Let the mask dry, then wear it with pride!

Tips

  • You may also want to practice step three on a piece of paper before applying paint or permanent marker to the mask.
  • In addition to store-bought plastic or papier mache masks, you can also make your own. Plaster casting your own face will give you the best fit, but is more time-consuming. Check out related wikiHow articles for ideas on making your own mask.
  • For a more authentic-looking final product, choose a plastic mask to start with. Plastic will generally yield a smoother, glossier finish than paper mache.
  • These instructions can easily be modified to make other versions of the Joey Jordison mask. The picture above corresponds to the mask worn for the album "Vol. 3," but pictures of other versions of his mask can be found online using a quick image search.

Things You'll Need

  • Plain white Kabuki mask
  • Red paint/permanent marker pen
  • Black paint/permanent marker pen
  • String, elastic, or a shoelace (if the mask does not come with an elastic string attached)
