Make a Chinese Spiral

Chinese spirals are one of the most beautiful things to hang up as decorations by the Do Window Art, door, or even outside on the porch. Spice up your home or workplace with this nifty craft.

Steps

  1. Paint the popsicle sticks. It is up to you on how long you want your spiral to be and the colors you want for it. You can either do a mix of colors or a degrade or fade from one color to the next. The image provided shows a degrade from green to yellow.
  2. Dab some instant glue on a popsicle stick.
  3. Place another popsicle stick on top of the glued one. You want to make it a little "off-sided" so that the ends are right next to instead of being on top of each other.
  4. Make each stack with 3 sticks each. Take one stack of 3 and continue gluing stacks together, using the same gluing method as before.
  5. Create your spiral from here as you glue each stack together.
  6. Place a nail on the top being very careful in not destroying the spiral in the process. Tie a piece of lengthy thread on the nail.

Tips

  • As you are gluing the sticks together, press down firmly so that the glue dries faster and better.
  • You could also pre-drill a small hole (step 6) into small spiral, insert nail and glue into place with the quick drying glue. An eye hook screw would also work replacing nail.
  • You might want to add the nail (step 6) into a small spiral, therefore I would suggest doing it after assembling the first 2-3 stacks, before continuing to complete the spiral. Trying to drive a nail into a full spiral will put too much stress on the spiral and may cause it to break.

Things You'll Need

  • Acrylic paint
  • Popsicle or ice cream sticks (60-80, depending how long you want the spiral to be)
  • Instant glue
  • Preserve Gold Embroidery Thread
  • Nail
