Make a Chocolate Covered Oreo Cookie Cake

Oreo cookies are a much beloved treat for many. So it stands to reason that making a whole cake that tastes like an Oreo is likely to be a hit with the Oreo fans in your life! You've resisted this long -- why wait any longer? Let's get our Oreo on!

Ingredients

  • 1 (18.25 ounce/520g) package devil's food chocolate cake mix (or rich chocolate mix)
  • 4 (1 ounce/30g) squares semi-sweet baking chocolate
  • 1/4 cup (2 ounces/60g) butter, cut up
  • 1 (8 ounce/225g) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup (3.5 ounces/100g) sugar
  • 2 cups (6.3 ounces/180g) thawed whipped topping
  • 12 Oreo cookies, coarsely crushed

Steps

Making the Cake Halves

  1. Preheat oven to 350ºF or 180ºC.
  2. Prepare the cake mix. Divide the cake mix in two (9-inch) round cake pans. Bake as directed on the package.
  3. Remove from oven when baked. To test doneness, insert a skewer; it should come out clean if baked. Cool the two layers of cake in the pans for 5 minutes. Then, invert onto wire racks and remove the pans. Cool the layers completely.

Making the Filling and Topping

  1. Filling: Place the chocolate and butter in a small microwaveable bowl.
    • Microwave on HIGH for 2 minutes or until the butter is melted.
    • Stir until the chocolate is completely melted.
    • Let cool for 5 minutes.
  2. Topping: Beat the cream cheese and sugar in large bowl with an electric mixer on medium speed. Beat until well blended. Add the whipped topping and cookie crumbs; mix lightly.

Assembling the Oreo Cake

  1. Place one of the cake layers, top-side down, on a serving plate.
  2. Spread the chocolate and butter mixture on the first layer as a filling.
    • Place the remaining cake layer, top-side up onto the first layer. Spread any remaining filling over the whole cake (not essential but it extends the flavor and uses up any of the filling left).
    • Then spoon the cream cheese topping over the top and sides of the cake, straight over the chocolate filling.
  3. Let stand until set. Decorate the top with a few real Oreo cookies for a lovely touch. All done!
    • Store covered in the refrigerator. That's if there's any left.

Tips

  • Regular chocolate cookies with a cookie style cream filling can be substituted for Oreo cookies.
