Make a Dress Using a Base Dress

Have you ever seen a dress that you loved? Getting a dress custom made is expensive depending on where you go. Here is an easy way to create a personalized dress by using an existing base dress.

Steps

  1. Know basic sewing skills. If you don't have these, this isn't the article for you.
  2. Sketch out a basic dress pattern. Keep it very simple. Your first dress is not going to be all that fancy. Color in the sketch, or at least decide on the color.
  3. Write down any extras you would need for it. This should include things such as sequins or ribbons. Write down how much you want to spend on this project; don't spend too much money on this first attempt.
  4. Buy a 'base dress'. Just buy a plain, and inexpensive dress from a charity or thrift shop. The base dress can be any color; it is dependent on the color of the dress in your picture or your imagination.
  5. Head off to the nearest fabric or craft goods store. Look around, browse, this should be fun. Get those sequins, those ribbons. If you see a fabric that you like but it's not for your dress, buy it anyway. You never know when you might need it for future projects.
  6. Elaborate on the base dress. Turn it into the dress in your sketch. Add the sequins or ribbons, or extra fabric. Make cuts and restitch where needed.
  7. Keep in mind you may mess up on your first tries but you'll get better. Later, you can make harder dresses. Don't give up if you mess up. This is a really neat way of transforming unwanted dresses into glorious new masterpieces of your own creation.

Tips

  • Try to stick to EASY dresses at first and don't get too angry when something messes up!
  • Tulle is a good cheap material but can be difficult to work with.
  • First dress should be a fairly easy one. Make sure it is plain and cheap.
