Make a Fashion Design Notebook

Ever wanted to design fabulous fashion pieces, but didn't know where to start? Then you came to the right place!

Steps

Getting Started

  1. Go to a local store such as Walmart, and purchase a sketchbook with 70+ pages, depending on how many sketches you plan on doing.
  2. Get fabric swatches or print out patterns that would make pretty fabric. Paste them on the first page. Under each swatch, label the patterns, such as pattern 001, 002, and so on.
  3. Turn the page. Write the name of your collection on that page. For example, if you are doing fancy prom dresses, try something like 'A Night to Remember'. Then, turn the page.
  4. Draw a design using a dress form. Look up online 'how to draw a dress form' if you need help. Sketch your design. Write possible prices to the side. Then write what fabrics would it be 'available in' so if you ever do sew it, you know which fabrics to use.

Making It Yours

  1. Personalize your sketchbook. Your sketchbook is is going to make an individual statement about you and your ideas, so start by making it personal. For example, write down your hobbies, what you like, and what you don't like. Reveal yourself by gathering materials that are special to you, for instance, mementos of places you've been, and maybe photos of family and friends.
  2. Start sketching in your sketchbook. It doesn't have to be fashion sketches -- just sketches of nature and things like that. Sketch in details. Take your time making them the best they can be.
  3. Taking what you've sketched so far, try to design clothes using nature's patterns and other things you sketched. After all, this is just the first step! The idea of the sketchbook is to ultimately create designs.
  4. Collect fabric scraps and colors in your sketchbook, and sketch a collection of 7 or more outfits according to the pattern of the fabrics and the colors. In the collection, make sure the outfits all match the "mood" of the colors. For example, red, orange and yellow could be a mood of summer or the leaves on the trees in autumn.
  5. Now name your collections and make more, using what you wrote about yourself on the first page. For example, if you like playing baseball, you might sketch baseball based outfits. If you like working with a certain color family, explore every hue. If you've recently been to Paris or London, sketch what a street scene would look to you, only in fashion. Get creative!

Tips

  • You can always just color it with colored pencils if you want it simpler.
  • To get wild fabrics cheaper, go to a local carpeting store, and ask if they have any old sample books you can have.
