Make a Homemade Pillow

If you're new to DIY (do it yourself) projects, making a homemade pillow is a wonderful place to start. Pillows can be made from any kind of fabric, and you can stuff them with pillow foam or fabric scraps - whatever you have on hand. Once you learn how to make your first homemade pillow, you'll probably want to make more!

Steps

  1. Search through the house for fabric. Look through the closets and dressers. Consider curtains, tablecloths, a sweater or an old coat. Fabric stores offer a very wide variety of fabrics that you can purchase as well.
  2. Cut away necklines, sleeves, seams, and hems.
  3. Pick out the shape that you want for your pillow. You can try all kinds of shapes such as hexagons, rectangles, or ovals so be creative!
  4. Layer two pieces of fabric on top of each other. Begin by drawing the shape that you would like on the top piece in a light colored pen or marker. If you are trying to make a specific size make sure to add an inch on the width and the height. Cut out your shapes with fabric scissors and make sure that the two pieces are the same size. (for a 1/2 inch seam on each side)
  5. After checking to make sure that the pieces of fabric are the same size, align them and stitch up some of the pillows. If you chose a square, stitch up three of the four sides. If you did a different shape then stitch up almost all of it and leave a portion of it open.
  6. Turn the pillow right side out and iron it flat.
  7. Prepare the opening. Tuck a half-inch of fabric inside the pillow and iron it flat.
  8. Stuff the pillow. Make the stuffing by cutting and shredding your old clothes, towels or pillows. You can also buy cotton or use feathers if you would like.
  9. Stitch the opening together with small stitches.
  10. Finished.
