Make a Milky Way Cake

Milky Way bars are available in many countries. They've often been advertised as a tiny snack option between meals. When they're added to a cake, they form a blissful big snack choice instead! Here is how to make the cake, also known in some quarters as a chocolate caramel cake.

This recipe serves approximately 8.

Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 8 Milky Way bars, chopped roughly
  • 2 sticks (250 grams or 16 tablespoons) unsalted butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs, separated; beat the egg whites for addition
  • 2 and ½ cups flour, sifted
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 and ¼ cups buttermilk
  • 1 cup pecan nuts, chopped

For the Frosting:

  • 2 and ½ cups sugar
  • 1 cup of evaporated milk
  • ½ cup butter
  • 6 ounces (170 grams) packet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup marshmallow crème

Steps

  1. Assemble the ingredients and items needed. Preheat the oven to 325ºF/160ºC and line the cake pan.
  2. Heat up the double boiler. Add the chopped candy bars and one stick (125g) of butter.
  3. Cream the sugar with the other stick of butter.
  4. Pour the melted Milky Way bars into the creamed butter and sugar mixture. Stir well to combine.
  5. Add the egg yolks, one at a time. Beat in after the addition of each yolk.
  6. Add the baking soda to a little buttermilk and stir to dissolve. Pour into the batter.
  7. Alternately pour in the flour and the remaining buttermilk to the batter. Stir after each addition and end by adding the flour.
  8. Add the pecan nuts. Stir through.
  9. Fold the batter into the beaten egg whites. The egg whites should be stiff before folding in.
  10. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan. Be sure to create an even top.
  11. Place the cake into the oven. Bake for one hour and 10 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean.
  12. Remove from the heat. Allow to cool completely on a wire cooling rack.
  13. Frost. To make the frosting:
    • Pour the evaporated milk, butter and sugar into a saucepan.
    • Heat over low heat until a soft ball forms when the mixture is dropped into cold water. Remove from the heat.
    • Add the chocolate bits and the marshmallow crème. Beat until the frosting becomes smooth.
  14. Use a frosting spatula or butter knife to smooth the frosting over the cooled cake. Allow to set and the cake is ready to serve.
  15. Finished.
