Make a Movie As a Kid

To make a movie as a kid you will need a green screen, props, actors, a director, producers, a plot, a place to film, and a camera. You can make a green screen if you want, search the internet for sources for buying one, or information about making your own.

Steps

  1. Get an idea. It could be a book that you or one of your friends wrote. It could be anything you want it to be.
  2. Write a Screenplay (script). It does not have to be perfect.
  3. Get actors. Ask your friends to be the actors, because getting real actors will most likely be hard.
  4. Get a camera. It could be a camcorder, digital camera, flip, a webcam on your computer, or a real directors' camera. Get a camera that films in 720p or above (1280x720 or above).
    • Make sure you know the camera like the back of your hand before you go to the shoot. A DSLR camera is recommended if you have the money. But don't spend too much money on a camera if you're not going to get a decent one. Don't expect the cheapest DSLR to have good movie recording features.
  5. Get a place to shoot your movie. You won't be able to shoot all your scenes on a green screen, so you could build sets or shoot on location like a local park.
  6. Ask the owner of the property you were imagining when writing your script if you can use his/her land, and ask if they can talk to your parents (optional). If you do that, your movie will be a success.
  7. Buy or build a green screen if you need one. If it doesn't work, try again.
  8. Rehearse each scene. Keep on trying.
  9. Film your movie several times through; you want as many good cuts as possible. You might need some people that are willing to do stunts, as stunt doubles.
    • Chances are you don't have a lot of money so unfortunately you can't get real stuntmen. And not a lot of people are willing to be stunt doubles, as no one is willing to do stunts and not have their faces shown (unless they get paid). Real stunt men are trained professionals, your friends are not!
  10. Watch your movie so far. See how it looks.
  11. Edit your movie. Watch through all your takes with your editor (unless you're the one editing it) and decide which takes you're going to use.
    • Try not to use Windows Movie Maker, as it will have hugely annoying lagging footage. Try to get your hands on Adobe Premiere Pro/Elements. If you have a lot of violence in your movie you may also want to invest in Adobe After Effects.
  12. Make up your own production company to present your movie. You can send it to real production companies, but it's most likely they'll turn you down.
    • If you want send your movie to theaters (they'll most likely turn you down as well), or if you have a home theater do it there, or just get it on DVD with Windows Live Movie Maker, and show it on your TV with your DVD player, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One or Blu-Ray.
  13. Have a party, if it's okay with your parents. Invite the actors, some of your parents' work friends over, your family and friends.
  14. Burn Discs for all actors and family members. Upload to YouTube/Vimeo/Facebook.

Tips

  • Have tons of patience. Movies take lots of time and energy.
  • A true idea comes from the heart. Some movies are based on real-life experiences.
  • If your director quits with his camera don't stop the movie, go buy one camera or use your Mom's or Dad's with their permission
  • Be sure on your green screen that there is no shadows or hardly any shadows and to make sure that the room it's in is well lit.
  • If you're going on vacation take pictures and scan them on your computer to have another green screen background.
  • Be sure to add really good effects if you're having trouble ask your Mom or Dad, siblings or friends to help, because they could offer some really good ideas.
  • Write a screenplay AKA: script, you and your friends could write it, even your Mom or Dad or siblings could help write it.
  • If you don't want to do the movie anymore, try to make it shorter so you can hurry up and finish it.
  • If one of your actors quit don't stop the movie, just get a new one that looks like him/her.
  • If you want to you can divide your movie into 2 or 3 parts. Most movies are only 1 part and most movies don't have 4 or more parts.
  • Be sure to be as far away as the green screen as you can.
  • Make your own movie in a book.
  • Tell your parents where you're going and when you're going to film your movie, so they won't be worried. They'll also know to not go where your green screen is and they won't be so loud when you are filming.
  • Make sure you pick actors that are willing to be in your movie.
  • Replay your movie lots of times. It will help you know if it's good or bad.
  • If you can't afford a green screen, use a giant piece of green paper.
  • If you have a minor mess-up, you can edit it out (as long as it's not obvious).

Warnings

  • You could get hurt because of some stunts.
