Make a Paper Scroll
Scrolls are a part of human history. Parchment was used as paper, and instead of keeping sheets in binders or folders, they were rolled up, forming scrolls. Making your own scroll is fun and is a craft that can be done cheaply.

Steps
Tea scroll
- Take your paper. Dip it in tea so that it is completely covered on both sides. Let it sit until it is as dark as you want. Carefully carry the paper to a place where you can set it outside, or if a wet day on the radiator, but make sure it won't blow away or burn. Make sure the paper is in the sun to dry.
- Wait for an hour, then return and grab your paper. Bring it back in to where you want to make the scroll.
- If you wish to write on your scroll, now is the time to do it. You can write whatever you want, in whatever type of handwriting you wish. If you want to, you can use a quill pen to get in the spirit! If you want to make it look even more handmade, purposely let the ink blot or run in several places.
- Take your chopsticks, separate them, and lay them on the edges of your scroll. Tape them down. Next, roll the paper around them so it is covering them completely. Tape it again. Make sure there is one rolled-up chopstick on each side.
- Roll your scroll in to the center from both sides. You can lightly tie a string around to secure it. Congratulations on your finished scroll!
Coffee and burning scroll
- Dip the paper in cold brewed coffee to make it look old. Cover it completely and leave until you like the color.
- Dry flat on a towel or tea towel. Note that it will stain whatever it dries on. If you don't want to ruin a towel, dry over plastic food wrap or a sheet of bubble wrap.
- Light a match over a safe, non-flammable surface. Burn some of the edges of the scroll to create an "eaten-away" look. Take care not to burn in too far or to catch the whole paper on fire.
- Dip your finger in the brewed coffee. Let the liquid drop over the burnt edges to deepen the color. This will help add to the antique effect.
- Repeat steps 3-5 from "tea scroll". Your "coffee and burning scroll" is finished.
Tips
- Be patient, and don't worry about perfection. Small rips, tears, or even inkblots make it seem more natural.
Warnings
- Also be careful not to write the wrong thing; you might have to start again!
- Be careful with the coffee. Don't spill it on yourself. Try not to use too much; it will drip!
- If you use a quill pen, be careful not to poke yourself!
