Make a Peter Pan Hat
Whether you’re making a Halloween costume, your child is in a school play, or you just love Peter Pan, making your very own Peter Pan hat is a simple process that can be done using several materials from felt to paper, all in about 30 minutes!

Steps
Making a Felt Peter Pan Hat
- Get the materials you will need. Making your Peter Pan hat will be a whole lot simpler once you have everything laid out.
- ½ a yard of green felt should be plenty of material to make a Peter Pan hat. Alternatively you can use two (2) 12” x 18” pieces of green felt as well.
- Fabric scissors (any scissors will work, but fabric scissors will give you the best cuts).
- Sewing machine, or a needle and some green thread.
- One large red feather.
- Measure out your felt. The dimensions used here will fit an average sized head. If you want to make your Peter Pan hat fit a specific head size, you can measure your head from front to back and use those measurements in place of the ones described here.
- If you’re using one larger piece of felt (½ a yard) measure out 24” x 18” and cut the section so you end up with a rectangle.
- Fold your 24” x 18” section of felt in half. Fold the fabric so that you end up with two (2) 12” x 18” sections stacked on top of one another.
- Outline the shape of the Peter Pan hat.You can either draw the shape of your hat freehand if you’re going for a more natural look, or print out an outline to follow.
- Peter Pan’s hat looks a bit like a Scalene triangle, meaning that all the angles are unequal with one side longer than the others. You can draw your outline in the shape of a triangle adding your own subtle curves as you like.
- Or you can print out an outline and place it on top of your felt rectangle and trace the outline.
- Cut the felt. Now it’s time to start shaping your Peter Pan hat.
- If you have a stencil, place it along the folded edge of your felt.
- Cut along the outline that you’ve either printed out or drawn for yourself.
- Sew the outer edges of your hat together. Now that you have two pieces of felt cut out in the shape of your hat, it’s time to start sewing.
- Measure between about ½-inch to ⅛-inch to give some extra room before you start sewing.
- You can use a sewing machine for a quicker and straighter line, or sew it by hand, especially if you want your Peter Pan hat to look even more unique.
- Make sure that you don’t sew up the bottom part of the hat where you will place it on your head.
- The shape should resemble somewhat of a triangle so leave the flat bottom part open.
- Clip the corners and curves of your hat. Your Peter Pan is currently inside out, so clip little snips at the corners and curves of your hat so that your hat will look cleaner and lay flatter.
- Once you’ve done that, and cut away any extra fabric that’s on the outside of your seam, it’s time to flip the hat right side out.
- Flip up the bottom flaps. You should have some extra fabric at the bottom of your hat where your head will go, so now flip them up and finger press them, or very gently use the lightest setting on an iron to iron them flat.
- Be careful here if you’re using an iron as you don’t want to burn your felt.
- Cut a small slit in the side of your hat. Now it’s time to create a small slit for the feather! simply take your scissors and give your hat a small clip.
- Put the feather in your cap and viola! You have made your very own felt Peter Pan hat!
Making a Peter Pan Hat Out of Paper
- Get your supplies. All you need here are a few simple supplies to make your own Peter Pan Hat. You can use whatever kind of paper you want, but green construction paper will get you the best look.
- Green construction paper that’s at least 12” x 18”.
- Pencil.
- Scissors.
- Glue.
- Red feather.
- Ruler.
- Fold the paper. Take your paper and fold it over into a rectangle that’s 9” x 12”.
- You should fold the paper so that the crease is on the 9” inch side while the open ends are on the 12” long side.
- Draw the outline of your hat using either a stencil outline, or once again, you can always draw it freehand. This is the same process from the first method above.
- Cut along your outline. Now simply cut out the shape of your hat.
- Start at one corner that’s opposite of your crease and cut along your outline.
- You should have somewhat of a triangular shape here with a flat, non-creased edge at the bottom, which is where your head will go.
- Fold up the flat edges. Now take the bottom part of your hat and fold up the paper to create the brim of your Peter Pan hat.
- Make a nice crease by pressing your finger along the fold.
- To make sure that both folds are of even height, flip your hat over after the first fold and fold the second flap up to match.
- Overlap the open edges and connect them. Connect the edges from the base of the hat, where the brim is, all the up to the tip.
- The slight folding over of the edges will give your Peter Pan hat a nice rounded, more natural look.
- If you want to glue them together you should now apply it to the edges. While any type of glue should work, something like a safe rubber cement, which has a brush might be the easiest method.
- You can also simply staple the open edges together.
- Or, if you want to add a bit more flair to your Peter Pan hat, you can sew the edges together like in the first method.
- Cut a small slit for your feather. Simply make a small cut on the side your hat for your feather.
- Alternatively, you place the stem of the feather inside your brim crease and glue or staple it in place.
Tips
- Sewing the edges by hand shouldn't take very long. Alternatively, you could use staples or other bonding agents if you want to.
- If you’re using glue, make sure that it’s safe for you and whoever will be wearing the Peter Pan hat. Also make sure it’s completely dry before putting the hat on.

- Always supervise children when they are using scissors or needles.
