Make a Simple Bun in Hair

A simple bun hairstyle occurs when the hair is swept up away from the face and the neck, twisted and wrapped into a coil secured by hair pins. This can be a means of exhibiting fashion or function. Ballerinas have historically worn buns for both purposes needing the freedom to move unimpeded and to look faultless. This article presents how to make a simple bun in hair.

Steps

  1. Brush through hair to remove tangles. Use the paddle brush for this because of the broader head of bristles. It will pull less, detangle more easily and smooth out the hair more quickly.
  2. Pull a sculpting brush through hair beginning at the nape of the neck and moving up towards the crown of the head. Reach the free hand that is not holding the sculpting brush under to catch the hair at the crown as the brush slides on to the ends and releases.
  3. Create a ponytail by repeating this pull, catch and release pattern in a circle around the head.
  4. Lay the sculpting brush down when you have a satisfactory ponytail so that you may have 2 hands to work with.
  5. Choose if you want a tight or looser hair bun.
    • Twist a hair elastic around the ponytail at this point for a tight hair bun.
    • Leave the hair elastic off at this point for a looser hair bun.
  6. Twist the tail of the ponytail to form a rope.
  7. Take the twisted hair and put your hand over your ponytail base then wrap it around your hand# Tuck the ends under the outer coil of hair to keep them from sticking out.
  8. Secure the hair bun with hair pins at multiple angles around the bun.
  9. Finished.

Tips

  • This hairstyle works best if the wearer has shoulder length or longer hair. The hair must be able to be put into a ponytail and then be wrapped at least once around itself.
  • When twisting and then wrapping, it helps to do both either clockwise or counterclockwise. If twisting the ponytail feels most natural in a clockwise motion, then it will create a nicer bun if you wrap the bun in a clockwise direction--and vice versa.
  • In order to dress up a simple bun, you could use hair pins with embellishments adorning them. This would still secure the bun, but add personality.
  • If your hair gets to frizzed around the edges try hair spraying it down.
  • You may want to spray the hair with a water spritzing bottle to dampen it before beginning in order to discourage stray ends from poking out.
  • Once the simple bun has been mastered, there are several variations to be tried: the half bun, the double bun, the messy bun and the braided bun.
  • Make sure when you are creating the bun to go in one direction because its easier and will make a more stylish looking hair bun.
