Make a Wedding Money Tree
A wedding money tree is a decorative branch placed on a gift table where guests can clip money for the wedding couple. It is typically a centerpiece item and is designed to coordinate with other wedding decorations. Money trees can be purchased, or you can make a wedding money tree of your own.
Steps
- Find a branch in the woods or your yard that is the size you would like for your money tree. Most people choose a relatively small branch with several limbs.
- Spray paint the branch the color of your choosing. White or silver would be good colors for weddings. You might want to paint it the color of your wedding theme, such as pink.
- Purchase a flower pot for displaying the branch. If your branch is white, you may want to purchase a white flower pot. You could put the branch in a flower pot and then place this pot in a larger decorative container.
- Place several heavy rocks in the bottom of the flower pot. This will weigh the pot down, so it will not tip over.
- Hold the branch in the pot with air drying clay. Be sure to allow plenty of time for the clay to dry.
- Cover the top of the pot to hide the clay. You can use tissue paper or cloth.
- Decorate the money tree. You can tie decorative ribbons around on the tree or add decorative flowers or ornaments to the tree. Be creative and try to match the wedding theme.
- Attach clips to the tree for adding money. You can use paper clips, plastic clips, or even small white clothespins. You may want to scatter a few of these clips around the base of the money tree.
- Place a suitable poem at the base of the tree. The poem should include the reason for the wedding money tree and a thank you to the guests for contributing to the tree.
- Start the wedding money tree by adding a few bills before guests arrive. This will let the guests know that this is a money tree, so they may add their own bills.
Tips
- There may be a tree type that coordinates with the wedding theme. For example, a cedar tree would work well for a Christmas wedding.
- You may want to provide small envelopes on the gift table for guests to place the money inside before clipping to the tree. There could also be pens and notes for guest to write well wishes and clip to the tree.
- Some people think money trees are against wedding etiquette. If you choose to have a money tree at your wedding, try to be discreet about it. Place the money tree to the side of the gift table, rather than in the very center.
