Write a Groom's Speech

Your wedding is coming up and, as the groom, you're expected to give a speech at the big event. Writing a speech can be a worrying task, but never fear! With a few simple steps, you'll have all your groom-speech-duties out of the way!

Steps

  1. Start off by thanking your father-in-law for his speech. Say this before thanking the guests for coming and thanking the hosts.
  2. Give a story about your wife. It can be about how you met her or your favorite time with her. Let everyone know why you're marrying this amazing woman and keep it specific rather than overly romantic (you don't want to sound too corny).
  3. Thank your wife-to-be for marrying you. Say something along the lines of 'I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you'.
  4. Keep it fairly short and succinct. There's no need to give the audience a heartfelt rendition of each date you had back in the past. They already know you love each other, so quickly drive your speech to the point!
  5. Relax. Don't stress about it too much, or it'll show when your hands shake and your forehead sweats. Keep a glass of water nearby. If you're really nervous, keep the written speech in your hand to refer to. Once it's over, you can sit back and wait for the best man's speech to commence.

Tips

  • Don't say anything that may embarrass the bride, yourself, and everyone else.
  • Don't beat around the bush and talk in a roundabout manner - everyone may be bored and it will get tiresome!
  • Make sure you thank the bride's parents.
  • Don't chew gum.
  • Don't worry about it too much- the big part will be over and you really only have to thank people.
  • Speak with genuine emotion and don't sound fake. Don't drone or talk in a monotone voice.
  • Don't worry too much about hilarious anecdotes and being overly witty. That's what the best man's speech is there for!
