Make a Witch's Broom with String

The witch's broom, or fishing spear, is a fun string game that many kids can enjoy. Follow these easy steps to make a perfect witch's broom!

Steps

  1. Begin by putting the string over your thumb and pinkie on both sides, but in front of your other three fingers.
  2. Reach over with right index finger and pull back.
  3. Twist the string on right finger one or two times.
  4. Reach over with left index finger and grab the string in between the loop on your right index finger. Make sure to pull from inside the space between the two sides of the string on your right index finger.
  5. Drop your thumb and pinkie on right hand. Now you have a witch's broom.

Alternate Method

  1. Tie the string into a loop and do Position 1. To do this, place the string behind the thumb, running across the palm, and behind the pinky of both hands.
  2. Move the right forefinger under the left palm string and pick it up by pulling your finger away. Twist the right forefinger 360 degrees away from you as you move it back to its starting position.
  3. Stick your left forefinger through the loop on your right forefinger, and pick up the string laying across your right palm. Pull your left hand back.
  4. Release the right thumb and right little finger loops at the same time, but don't let go of the loop on your middle finger.
  5. Pull the strings between your hands taut. You have now completed a witch's broom!

Tips

  • Yarn works just as well and it's cheap.
  • Use nylon string. It cannot break easily and will make tough knots.

Warnings

  • Parents: supervise a youngster if he or she is attempting this activity. They could choke on the string or tie tight knots on their fingers that cut off circulation.

Things You'll Need

  • Loop of string
