Make a Worm with String

Kids and adults throughout the world have enjoyed using string to make fun figures for thousands of years. If you need a fun project to cheer you up, you'll find this wriggling worm a delight.

Steps

  1. Hang the string noose over the left thumb and fingers, palm down.
  2. Move under the left near hanging thumb string using your right forefinger, and pick up the left far hanging thumb string.
  3. Pull this string a short distance out (creating a loop) and give it one twist to the right. Do not extend hands apart.
  4. Transfer the noose from the right forefinger to the left forefinger.
  5. Move under the near string running across your left palm (with right forefinger again), and pull back the left forefinger noose.
  6. Twist the noose right once and slip the noose onto the left middle finger.
  7. Repeat this pattern for the left ring and little fingers.
  8. Make the worm disappear in the ground. Release the left thumb noose, and pull the left little finger string down.
  9. Finished.

Tips

  • You can simply tie the string together with a square knot (don't tie a granny knot), then trim off the ends, but eventually you'll want a knotless string loop.
  • There are many more string figure games. It is a great pastime and you can find more figures through wikiHow, books, or websites.
  • You can use whatever string you can find laying about, including yarn, but nylon string works best.
  • To determine the correct length of string for your hand size, hold the end of the string between your thumb and against the edge of your palm, then wrap the string loosely around your palm (but not thumb) 8 times. Cut the string and tie or melt the ends together.
  • Make sure you have enough slack to slip the loop onto the finger. You can always tighten the string later by pulling either of the long hanging strings.
  • Craft stores also have braided nylon string that can be used. Some figures come out best if you use a thin slippery string, and heavy-test braided nylon fishing line works well. A thicker nylon string is also readily available and works well.
