Make a Word Search Greeting Card

For a friend or family member who loves puzzles, an ordinary greeting card just won't do. Make them a customized word search card and any self-proclaimed nerd or geek will be delighted by your effort!

Steps

  1. Create a word search. Choose the words that you want the reader to search for. You can make your own word search in a spreadsheet program; make an equal number of columns and rows, with each cell in the shape of a square. Fill in your target words (horizontally, vertically, and diagonally, but generally not backwards) and then put random letters in the remaining cells. When you’re finished creating your search, simply save it and then print it onto your light weight cardstock.

    • There are also websites that will create a word search for you. Type in a title and then add the words suitable to your greeting that you want to have featured in the search. You can even adjust the difficulty level of the search itself.
    • You’ll want to keep an eye on the size. You won’t want to be bigger than about twelve letters across, as that’s the maximum size that will fit on your card without having to do any fancy adjusting.
  2. Using your paper cutter or scissors, cut the word search from your paper.
  3. Cut the words out too, if necessary.
  4. Fold your heavier cardstock in half and simply glue or tape the word search to the front of your card and the words to the back of the card for a cheat sheet.
  5. Write a personal message inside your card. You might want to give clues for each word that they're supposed to be searching for, like "Joanna's favorite flower" or "What I tripped over on my 22nd birthday" or "Where we met".

Tips

  • For an added personal touch, make the words that they need to search for have a theme, or tie them to inside jokes.
  • You can also make a custom envelope to put the card in.
  • If this is a birthday card, it's best paired with a quirky gift.

Things You'll Need

  • A piece of 8 ½ " x 11" light weight white or light-colored cardstock
  • A piece of 8 ½ " by 5 ½" heavier weight cardstock
  • A glue stick or sticky-back tape
  • A paper cutter or scissors
