Make an Indoor S'more

S'mores are a staple of the Scout experience and every girl and boy should learn to make one, but sometimes it is not practical or possible to make a fire or even to go outdoors. Here are some possibilities for making S'mores at the troop meeting indoors.

Steps

  1. Find a heat source for the marshmallows: this can be a microwave oven,an oven, a can of "fondue" fuel, or even a large candle. Make sure you have lots of adult supervision and the heat source is supported on a heatproof surface.
  2. Prepare your graham cracker half with a square of chocolate bar and set aside for the marshmallow. In the case of a microwave S'more, put the whole S'more together and place on a microwave plate.
  3. When using candle or fuel, put the marshmallow on the end of a fondue fork or use long bamboo skewers that have been soaked in water for at least 15 min. Hold marshmallow over flame at height of {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} or so and turn to brown.
  4. Carefully place browned marshmallow onto prepared graham cracker/chocolate combo and place other half of graham cracker on top of marshmallow. Press lightly and slide stick or fork out.
  5. When using microwave, microwave on high in 15 second bursts for 30 to 60 seconds. If you want to experiment, turn on high and watch the marshmallow expand to 3 times its size- warning: this is messy to do.
  6. Finished.

Tips

  • 'Fun size' candy bars make for no complaining and easy distribution. Despite their small size it really is enough for one S'more.
  • When microwaving the chocolate melts faster if you use chocolate chips instead of candy bars.
  • If you buy 'fun size' candy bars when on sale after Halloween you can freeze them until you need them. (sometimes they look milky on the edges when thawed, they still taste great)
  • a cookie sheet lined with aluminium foil makes a good base for your candle or fuel.
  • Safe, non-cook S'mores can be made with chocolate frosting and marshmallow creme- great for Daisies and younger Brownies (and of course Seniors who act like Daisies again)
  • Have an old (washed) coffee can half full of hot water ready to put used sticks/forks into after marshmallows are pulled off. This not only cools them down, but (sort of) washes them off for the next use.
  • S'mores can be made in the oven by wrapping put together S'mores in foil and placing on cookie sheet in 300* oven for 5-10 minutes.
  • If you use bamboo skewers instead of fondue forks you must soak them or they will catch fire.
  • Bamboo skewers are very smooth and can make your heating marshmallow roll around the stick, only heating one side. Solve this problem by using two sticks for one marshmallow stuck in {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} apart and held together at the ends.

Warnings

  • Young children tend to touch the end of the fork and burn themselves if not watched carefully. If you make them buddy up and only one buddy heats his/her marshmallow at a time the other buddy can be ready with his/her graham cracker top to push while the fork is pulled out.
  • If using a candle make sure the wick is a non-lead based wick.
  • the sterno (fuel) can get very hot- do not touch!
