Open SWF Files

Do you have SWF files of your favorite Flash movies and games, but can't figure out how to play them? Luckily, there are lots of ways to open and play SWF files. The computer is the most popular choice, but with a little patience, you can also play them on your mobile devices as well.

Steps

On a Computer

  1. Unzip the file (if necessary). Sometimes SWF files will be packaged in ZIP files. You can extract the file by double-clicking the ZIP file to open it, and then dragging the SWF file to the location you want to save it to.
  2. Open your web browser on your computer. You can use virtually any web browser to open SWF files, including Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and others.
  3. Click and drag the SWF file into your browser window.
  4. Release the file in the browser window. Your SWF file should start playing automatically.
    • If your file can't be opened, you may need to install the latest version of Flash for your browser. Install-Adobe-Flash-Player.

SWF Player

  1. Find a suitable Flash player. There are a variety of free and professional players that are available online. These may offer more playback options than a web browser. Popular programs include:

  3. Right-click on the downloaded SWF file.
  4. Select Open With.
  5. Select your Flash player from the list of suggested programs. If you can't find the new player on the list, select "Choose default program..." (Windows) or "Other" (OS X) and browse for the newly-installed player.
    • You can usually find the player installed in the "Program Files" folder on your C: drive (Windows), or in your "Applications" folder (OS X).
  6. Play the file. Once you select your Flash player, your file should begin playing. You can usually pause, rewind, and interact in other ways using the player
