Own an MG
If you have (or soon will have) a classic British sports car, it is vital to take good care of it. The value of these cars is increasing but so is the amount of MGs in less-than-optimal condition. Keep yours in great condition for the sake of posterity and collector's pride.
Steps
- Buy an MG if you do not already have one. Look locally first, as you might have to tow it if it is not in great working condition. If locally does not work, try looking online and see what offers there are to drop the car off to you.
- Find a reliable mechanic, or learn how to be one fairly quickly. If you don't know anything about tinkering under the bonnet, you will be at a disadvantage in caring for your MG. It can also be helpful if you can locate the original manual for the car. If not, check out online auction sites, as there is a thriving trade in finding such manuals and getting them to the anxious mechanic.
- Locate the nearest auto parts store that stocks MG parts. Your local one may not stock them, not have the expertise in the parts needed. It might take some online searching and it is a good idea to develop a good relationship with your stockist so that he or she can order in parts that they don't have when you ask nicely.
- Put it into good order. Not only the mechanics, but the body also need to be maintained. Consider painting and polishing, as well as upgrading or updating accessories attached to the car inside and out.
- Enjoy driving it at all times and expect people to compliment your car. MGs attract attention. This can be positive and negative, so be careful where you park it; if in any doubt, always use a garage car-park for safety.
- Consider joining car shows to show off your rejuvenated MG. If you join a club of MG enthusiasts, this is a fun hobby that can take you all around your country, or even the world!
Tips
- Learn to change your own oil.
- You will need ramps, these cars sit low to the ground.
- Have extra oil.
- Keep your MG clean and shiny, this will attract more fans of your car
- If you don't know anything about cars, join a MG club or read forums online.
Warnings
- MGs are classics and British and they will break down. Don't get frustrated with this, enjoy the days they run. And become proficient at fixing them!
- Work on your MG at your own risk. It isn't hard to do, but there are always dangers.
