Pack Without Wrinkles

It sounds too good to be true, but packing this way absolutely works. You can even pack wrinkled clothes and they will come out less wrinkled. Also, you can pack more clothes than you can pack through conventional methods.

This works for rectangle suitcases of all sizes, but let's visualize you're packing a rectangular suitcase large enough for a week's worth of outfits.

Steps

  1. Gather together all the clothes you wish to pack. That would be dresses, blouses, slacks, jackets, sweaters, underwear, shoes, etc.
  2. Begin with the items most prone to wrinkling -- suits, dresses, blouses, etc. -- and work your way down to least wrinkle-prone or "don't care" items.
  3. Lay each item flat in the suitcase without folding. When you've neatly arranged one item flat, stack another on top of it.
    • Collars and waistbands should touch the suitcase edge that enables more of the article to fit inside. Pant waistbands should snug against the edge with the longer length, for example. Allow sleeves, pantlegs, skirt lengths to hang over the edges as you're stacking.
  4. When you're finished stacking your wrinkle-prone clothes, place your underwear, bathing suit, etc., in a protective bag. The point is you need a soft "pillow" for what's to come.
  5. Place this bag in the center of your suitcase on top of the pile of clothes you've stacked.
  6. Neatly wrap the ends of the article across the bag on top of the pile. Layer sleeves, pantlegs, skirts, etc., as you drape your way down to the bottom.
  7. Place shoes, belts, etc., around the perimeter of the bundle you've made.
  8. Close up because you're done!
  9. When you arrive at your destination, work in reverse to open up your wardrobe. You will be pleasantly surprised how neat your clothes have remained.

Tips

  • You may wish to add your toiletries to the plastic "pillow" in the center. Just make sure you've protected them from spilling/breaking and you've surrounded them with soft items.
  • Does this method mean you have to unpack everything when you arrive? Depends. This is great for folks who like to unpack wherever they stay. But you don't have to. You can unwrap and lift the pile down to the item you want and then put the pile back on top of it. Whatever you do, it beats having to use an iron or steamer.

Things You'll Need

  • A rectangular or square suitcase for which the lid configuration provides full access to the interior.
  • A good-sized protective plastic bag that closes tightly.
