Pick a Good YouTube Name

When you decide you want to start a channel on YouTube, there are few things more important to your success than your username. This is what all YouTube viewers will see when your videos turn up on searches, and will be how viewers remember your channel. Even if you’re only creating an account to comment on videos, your name will still say a lot about you, and change the way people react to what you say.

Steps

General Ideas

  1. Give it time. Because your name is going to represent you in the YouTube world, you don’t want to just rush into it. Take some time to go over your options, and let them simmer for a while. You may surprise yourself and come up with something brilliant out of the blue.
  2. Make a list of what makes you “you”. A list of your hobbies and interests can help you come up with ideas for a username. You could include an interest as a word or combination of words. People are attracted to the person behind the channel, not the channel itself, so your name should say something about you.
    • If you’re making your name simply to comment, it should still reflect who you are. You are joining a community, and you will build recognition if you comment often.
  3. Relate your name to your content. If you’re building a channel, it may help to build your name around it. This will help people easily see what you’re about. For example, if you’re running a cooking channel, you can use a cooking term in your channel name. If you’re making a video game channel, focus on gaming-related terms or your gaming name.[1]
    • Different content calls for different styles of names. How-To videos should have a name that resembles a television series, while game channels can get by on the gaming name that the channel creator uses. This is because people who watch gaming channels are watching an individual’s skills at the game, while How-To watchers are looking for reliable and trustworthy instructions.
  4. Match your audience. Your name should match the taste of your audience. An immature name for a channel dealing with mature topics will make people less likely to stay and watch. This is especially important if you aim to Earn-Money-on-YouTube. You’ll need a professional sounding name in order for viewers to take you seriously.
  5. Make it catchy. Your name should be short and sweet, with as few words as possible. You can use a thesaurus and dictionary to help you come up with words you might have overlooked. Use some word tricks to help make your name pop and be easily remembered.
    • Rhyming – A rhyming username will be easy to remember and will stand out to viewers.
    • Alliteration – Using multiple words that start with the same letter can make your user name memorable. When using multiple words in a name, use capital letters for each new word. This will make it easy for others to read and will help your name stand out.
    • Play on words – If your name has a cute hook, people will remember it.
  6. Let people know you’re a channel. You can include words in your username to denote that you are a channel. Suffixes such as -TV, -vision, and -cast will let the viewer know that you are running a channel with content. Since all YouTube users have a channel, even if they don’t upload something, this will let people quickly know that you produce content.
  7. Avoid adding symbols to a taken name. Simply adding numbers or “xX” or something similar to an already taken name will only serve to dilute your brand and make your name less memorable. Instead, focusing on creating something unique, even if it’s not your first choice.
  8. Read it out loud. Once you think you’ve come up with a good name, try reading it out loud. Does it roll off the tongue and sound catchy? If not, it may not end up being very memorable. The way your username sounds in the minds of other readers will affect their engagement and retention.
  9. Understand that your YouTube name is the same as your Google name. Recently, Google has switched the YouTube account system over to Google+. That means that all YouTube accounts are now Google+ accounts. If you change your YouTube name, it will change the name for all of your Google services, such as Gmail and Google+. If you want to keep your Google account name as your real name, you will need to create a new Google account specifically for use with YouTube.
