Prepare for a Case Interview

Looking for a internship or job in consulting? This article will teach you how to prepare yourself for that case interview you need to nail.

Steps

  1. Familiarize yourself with what a case interview is. There are lots of resources online that can help you do this. (See the links section.) Watching a few mock interview videos will help you better understand the setting and procedure of a case interview. You can also read the basic introduction sections in Case in Point or any other case book to get a basic understanding of how the interview works.
  2. Study different types of cases and build your own framework for each type. Most case books list different types of cases and provide you with frameworks for each type. Know these frameworks but do not just follow the textbook. It is better if you can combine your knowledge in business and develop your own framework.
  3. Practice the technique. The best way to get better at doing cases is by practicing. Pair up with a friend or classmate and case each other using the cases provided in different case books. Give each other feedback after each case and take notes on all the areas where you can improve on.
  4. Go through your notes and feedback received from partners before your interview. This will refresh your memory on the mistakes you have made and areas you can improve on.
  5. Research the company you are interview with and familiarize yourself with the industries and verticals they specialize in. A lot of times company will case you on industries they focus on. You can also go on glassdoor.com to search for past interview questions.
  6. Be confident and nail that interview!
