Prepare for a Vocal Audition

Are you freaking out about a school play or choir audition? Maybe counties? Maybe even bigger? No sweat! You will do fine as long as you have faith in yourself!

Steps

  1. Do not drink or eat any dairy products for 24 hours, especially in the few hours before the audition. This is very crucial. Dairy builds up pre-existing mucus, and no one wants to hear sound coming from a throat clogged with mucus.[1]
  2. Take lots of vitamin C in the days leading up to the audition. You wouldn't want to get sick, would you?
  3. Talk an adequate amount the day of the auditions to get proper articulation. you may want to take a few deep breaths from your diaphragm throughout the day. It can really help with the stress of your audition.
  4. Drink water regularly. Not just before the audition, but always, to help maintain the quality of your voice. It's a myth that you need 8 cups a day, but you should drink anytime you are thirsty, eating salty food, or feel some buildup of phlegm or mucus.
  5. Don't stress out! This is a very important step. Do whatever you do to calm yourself. Try some yoga or meditation. At least take a few deep breaths! A stress filled voice is not impressive and can harm your voice. Just think that you are in your room singing your favorite song and no one is going to hear you.
  6. Warm up a bit. Do something to get your voice ready to give the performance of your life.
  7. Always stay positive. If you go into that room thinking "I can't do this. Everyone's better than me", then it's going to show. We use our voice to show a lot of emotion and a lack of confidence, stress, or anything will show. Just know you can do it and think that you are the best vocalist in that auditioning room.

Tips

  • Be confident! There should be nothing to worry about!
  • Just remember, that if you don't pass in the end, then it's okay! It does not in any way mean that you're a bad singer. And of course there are always other parts you can audition for.
  • Bring an iPod or something to do. Learn a skill that can attract conversation. Most vocalists(or at least from my area) are very social. Try card games or hair braiding.
  • Bring a snack! The auditioning process can be long.
  • If you love performing, tell that to the judges!
  • Have fun! You enjoy singing and now you get to showcase your talent!

Warnings

  • Do not skip warming up! If you do, you risk permanently damaging your voice- and then where would you be?!
  • Remember not to consume any dairy products! This is essential to having a great audition!
