Preserve a Signature on an Article of Clothing

If your favorite celebrity (or anyone else) has just autographed an article of clothing for you...congratulations! But now you're faced with the difficult task of preserving your hard-won treasure. If the autograph was written with a Sharpie, it is in permanent ink and should not wash out. But just to be on the safe side...

Steps

  1. Before washing, place your article of clothing, by itself, in the dryer (high heat setting) for approximately 30 minutes. The heat from the dryer will set the ink so that it will not be able to be washed out.
  2. Wash to your heart's content!
  3. Finished.

Tips

  • Another idea is to embroider (sew) along the signature, this works great for "signature bears" etc.
  • An alternate method is to use an iron or blowdryer to set the signature. This is the best method to save money and energy. When outlining in acrylics use the blow dryer method to set the paint in.
  • If you are still a little skeptical of this method, spray the article heavily with Febreze or soak it in white vinegar.

Warnings

  • Be careful of removing clothing right after being in a dryer on the "high heat" setting. Zippers and snaps can get very hot and burn your skin.
