When the snow is falling down on you in about November, it's maybe the time for you to put snow tires on your car if you don’t want to have an accident. However, have you ever changed tires? Do you know how to put snow tires on your car? (If you are here, I think not)

Fortunately, changing a tire is a simple task if you don’t mind getting a little bit dirty!

Enjoy…

Steps

  1. Find a flat, safe and dry workplace. Make sure the car can’t roll.
  2. Prepare the four snow tires next to you.
  3. Remove the hub-cap of the four tires.
  4. Loosen the nuts by turning counter-clockwise using a spanner. Use  the key to loosen the nuts. Be careful to not completely loosen the nuts.
  5. Place the jack under the car. Make sure the jack is positioned in front of the mark specially made for this operation.
  6. Turn the jack's crank to raise the tire from the ground. You need to raise the tire enough to pull it to you after. About twenty centimetres from the ground should be enough.
  7. Remove the nuts completely. Be careful to not loose the nuts, so, put them in a box in order to not to loose them.
  8. Remove the wheel.
  9. Place the snow tire on the hub.
  10. Tighten the nuts by turning them clockwise by hand until they are all tight. You can tighten the nuts in a staggered manner. Avoid using too much force to tighten the nuts because you could upset the balance of the jack.
  11. Lower the car to the ground using the jack.
  12. Tighten the nuts as much as possible with a spanner that fits.
  13. Remove the jack.
  14. Repeat for the others tires on the step 4 to step 13.

Tips

  • Always start by tightening the nuts by hand. Otherwise, you risk damaging the thread.
  • Always put the handbrake on.
  • You can press the end of spanner to creating a better leverage. You can even use your foot, but be sure to keep your balance. So, it will be easier to tighten or loosen the nuts.

Warnings

  • Have a good trip !
  • Check tire’s pressure often enough.
  • It’s important to use snow tires that fit in order to not have a bad surprise.
