Put a Link in an Email

This article teaches you how to insert a hyperlink within an email. Doing so will make it such that, when a portion of text is clicked on, the recipient will be directed to a website.

Steps

Using Gmail

  1. Open your Gmail account. If you're already logged into Gmail, doing so will open your inbox.
    • If you aren't logged into Gmail, enter your email address and password and click Sign in.
  2. Click Compose. It's in the top-left corner of the page. Doing so will open a window on the right side of the page in which you can compose your email.
  3. Enter your email's information. This will include a recipient's email address in the "To" field, a subject in the "Subject" field (optional), and the email's body text in the area below the "Subject" field.
  4. Select the hyperlink text. Click and drag your cursor across the text in the body that you wish to turn into a link. Doing this will highlight the text.
  5. Click the "Insert link" icon. It's the chain image at the bottom of the "New Message" window.
  6. Type in your URL. You'll enter the URL in the "URL" field that's below the field with your highlighted text in it.
  7. Click OK. It's in the bottom-left corner of the window. Doing so will link the URL to your selected text. When you send your email and the recipient opens it, they'll be able to click the linked text to open the website.

Using Yahoo

  1. Open your Yahoo account. Doing so will open the Yahoo home page.
    • If you aren't already logged in, click Sign in in the top-right corner of the page, then enter your email address and current password and click Sign in.
  2. Click Mail. It's in the top-right corner of the Yahoo home page.
  3. Click Compose. It's in the top-left corner of the page.
  4. Enter your email's information. This will include a recipient's email address in the "To" field, a subject in the "Subject" field (optional), and the email's body text in the area below the "Subject" field.
  5. Select the hyperlink text. Click and drag your cursor across the text in the body that you wish to turn into a link. Doing this will highlight the text.
  6. Click the "Insert Link" icon. This icon resembles a chain at the bottom of the page.
  7. Type in your URL. You'll enter the URL in the "URL" field that's below the field with your highlighted text in it.
  8. Click OK. It's in the bottom-left corner of the window. Doing so will link the URL to your selected text, which means the person to whom you send your email will be able to click the linked text to open the website.

Using Outlook

  1. Open your Outlook account. If you're already logged into Outlook, doing so will open your Outlook inbox.
    • If you aren't already logged in, click Sign in, enter your email address (or phone number) and password, and click Sign in.
  2. Click +New. It's above your inbox's list of emails. Doing so will open a new window on the right side of the Outlook page in which you can create a new email.
  3. Enter your email's information. This will include a recipient's email address in the "To" field, a subject in the "Add a subject" field (optional), and the email's body text in the area below the "Add a subject" field.
  4. Select the hyperlink text. Click and drag your cursor across the text in the body that you wish to turn into a link. Doing this will highlight the text.
  5. Click the "Insert hyperlink" icon. This icon looks like two overlapping circles
  6. Type in your URL. You'll enter the URL in the text field to the right of the "URL:" text.
  7. Click OK. It's at the bottom of the URL window. Doing so will attach the link to your highlighted text. When you send the email and your recipient opens it, they'll be able to click the link to open the website.

Using iCloud Mail (Desktop)

  1. Open your iCloud account. While you can't add hyperlinks to an email in the Mail app on iPhone, you can add them to an email written from the desktop iCloud Mail site.
    • If you aren't already signed into iCloud, enter your Apple ID and password and click .
  2. Click Mail. It's the blue app with a white envelope icon.
  3. Click the pencil and pad icon. This button is at the top of the iCloud Mail page. Clicking it will open a new window in which you'll compose your email.
  4. Enter your email's information. This will include a recipient's email address in the "To" field, a subject in the "Subject" field (optional), and the email's body text in the area below the "Subject" field.
  5. Click the A icon. It's in the top-right corner of the page.
  6. Select the hyperlink text. Click and drag your cursor across the text in the body that you wish to turn into a link. Doing this will highlight the text.
  7. Click the www button. It's near the top-right side of the page. Doing so will bring up a window with your highlighted text and a URL field.
  8. Type in your URL. You'll enter the URL in the "URL" field that's below the field with your highlighted text in it.
  9. Click OK. Doing so will save the hyperlink. Your website is now linked to the highlighted text. When your recipient opens the email, they'll be able to click the text to open the link.
