Quickly Climb a Fence

chain link fence with ease.

Steps

  1. Get a running start. Approach the fence from a straight angle. Having about a 4-to-5-feet distance from the the fence when you start running usually provides a great head start.
  2. Jump when you get about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} away from it. You should be in the air while still traveling at the fence.
  3. Grab onto the fence.
  4. Stick your left foot inside a spot halfway or three quarters up the fence. Leave your right foot idle, while Holding the top of the fence with both hands.
  5. Get into a half squat on top of the fence. Do this by putting your right foot on top of the fence.
  6. Jump or climb down, depending on how much time you have left.
    • If you jump down, bring up your left foot and have that go down first, followed by your right foot. Break the fall by landing bent-kneed.
    • If you decide to climb down, grab onto the top bar and then let yourself down. It should be a very small fall from there.

Tips

  • Never have any baggy clothing or you can get caught on the fence or your pants could rip causing embarrassment.
  • Make sure you know what is on the other side or the fence. Dogs don't like strangers and prize flower owners won't like you much if you don't. Also, make sure there aren't any bugs or any other objects in the opening or you could end up with disgusting stuff all over you.
  • If the fence is a little high, and you need to jump, as soon as you hit the ground, get down and roll. It helps to break the fall.
  • You are guaranteed a better performance if you can run faster and jump higher.
  • If the fence is old and bent at the top, have a rope to tie the fence to the post. Or if you don't have access to rope or a thick cord, have a partner clamp the edges till you are completely over.
  • Some shoes are better for climbing fences than others. Try to get a light, flexible shoe with a good grip. Having smaller toed shoes will allow you to better put your feet in the links. Boots provide support but sacrifice some speed. Crocs would be good shoes, they are perfectly flexible and they have just the right toe size for climbing a fence.

Warnings

  • Don't try such a high fence your first few times. You could fall and get injured.
  • Avoid fences with barbed wire, tied wires with sharp edges at the top, or razor wire at the top. Always check beforehand if you can.
  • Don't trespass. Keep an eye out for warning signs. If the fence has barbed wires, it was obviously meant to keep people out.
  • Be sure to not wear any clothes that can get snagged on the wires sticking out at the top. Wear short-sleeves and shorts to make it easiest, although you then have no protection from getting scratched.
