Race Motocross in Sand
Template:Stub There are so many different ways to ride/race in sand, as well as many types of sand. Although it's best to get your own feel for racing in sand, you can learn some pointers to help guide your experience.
Steps
- Understand that most starts on sand tracks, (although not all), have concrete starts. To approach it with confidence, select a good gate! If the corner is {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} out and makes a 90 degree left hand sweeper, select a gate left of the box. This will give you a slight advantage over people on the right of the box because your that much closer to the corner.
- Don't be afraid of everyone else! If they can pass you, they're probably skilled enough to pass you without taking you out. Get out in front early; there are two parts in a race: the start to the first corner, and the first corner to the checkered flag. The start is so crucial because it is the only place where you can pass 41 other riders in a matter of seconds!
- Do gate prep! When you go to a concrete start, it usually is about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} long bike ways and there are anywhere from 20 - 50 gates depending on the size of the race. Always sweep your gate clear of sand mud dirt etc., because when someone in the moto before you starts, they roost the gate, and roost or loose dirt can cause little to no traction for you. Concrete is one of the most tricky things to start on because you don't know if your going to stick or spin. It is a good idea to "light up the rear wheel" or spin your tyre now not like drag race burn your knobbies of spin but just enough to get all the dirt off and make your tyre a little sticky!
- This is a very important part – place your body in a straight up and down. Do not lean over the bars! Doing so will cause you to spin and lose the holeshot!
