Raise a Perfect Garchomp

A Garchomp is a very strong and cool pseudo-legendary Pokémon. If you train it well, you may have an almost invincible Dragon Pokémon. All you need to do is have the patience to train it, raise its level, and use it for battles.

Steps

  1. Catch a Gible.
  2. Get a Gible with the nature Adamant or Jolly. Jolly might be the best, because then Salamence, Pikachu, and Celebi will not be faster than your Garchomp, and you can outrun faster Pokémon such as Gengar. You can either keep on catching Gible until you get one or you can breed until you get one. Giving the Gible parent an Everstone to hold will probably increase the chances of getting a good nature. These natures are the ones that you'll want because they don't lower any of Garchomp's perfect stats.
  3. "Train" it by fighting Pokémon that give Attack and Speed EVs, so that it gets 252 Attack EVs and 252 Speed EVs. You can use Protein and Carbos for the first 100 EVs in each stat if you have enough money.
  4. Raise its Level to 24 and let it learn (via leveling or giving it TMs) powerful moves. If you do not mind extra training, then breed for a Gible egg. Its stats (could) be higher and it can learn powerful egg moves like Thrash. Placing it in the day-care will require a lot of walking, but allows higher EV training.
  5. Let it evolve at Level 24 into a Gabite.
  6. Train. If it is not in the daycare, train it in Attack and Speed. Fighting Pokémon with normally high Attack or Speed stats will raise Gabite/Garchomp's total ability.
  7. Raise its Level to 48 and let it learn (via leveling or giving it TMs) powerful moves.
  8. Evolve it. At level 49, the Gabite can learn Dragon Rush, a highly powerful but slightly inaccurate move. Evolving it at level 48 will give a marginal amount of extra Attack. Evolving it at level 49 lets you learn Dragon Rush earlier. It's your choice.
  9. Teach. When you have Garchomp, the following moves are highly recommended:
    • Earthquake
    • Stone Edge or Rock Slide
    • Dragon Claw, Dragon Rush, Dual Chop, or Outrage. Dragonbreath and Dragon Pulse are optional, as is Draco Meteor, but it wastes the use of Garchomp's Special Attack stat (but this can be easily changed by switching your Garchomp out).
    • Fire Fang/Crunch
    • Dragon Dance
    • Substitute
    • Protect
  10. "Give" a useful item (like a Choice Scarf or a Choice Band) to your Garchomp.
  11. Battle competitively with this Garchomp and you may win many more matches than you previously did. If you use Garchomp on the same team as a Tyranitar, Garchomp will get a 20% chance to avoid getting hit. Just remember to have other Pokémon that can take in Water, Grass, Ice, Fighting, and Fairy attacks. Another good idea if you want to do this is to give it a Yache Berry to hold. This will let your Garchomp survive most Ice type attacks.

Tips

  • If you can, make sure you can back up Garchomp with plenty of Full Restores and Revives, as you have to expect the worst to happen all the time.
  • Its final moveset should be something like Earthquake, Dragon Claw, Stone Edge and Fire Fang. This is not the only moveset you should use; feel free to tweak it to your liking.
  • Sandstorm activates its Sand Veil ability so it is less likely to be hit, and all his other attacks have at least 100 power.
  • While you're raising it, try to fight Pokémon that give out EVs in Attack. These Pokémon, among others, give you a special bonus in Attack: Shinx, Luxio, Luxray, Machop, Machoke, Machamp, Bibarel, Snover and Carnivine.
  • Try to teach Garchomp Dragon and Ground type moves. It gets a 50% boost because it is Dragon and Ground-type.
  • It might not be a very good idea to send Garchomp in if you are against an Ice-type or Fairy-type Pokémon, because Garchomp is weak to Ice and Fairy attacks. In addition, Fairy-type Pokémon are immune to Dragon-type attacks. If the opponent sends in an Ice-type Pokémon against your Garchomp, you usually can beat it if you use Swords Dance while they switch in if your Garchomp holds a Yache Berry. If that Ice Pokémon, such as Froslass, is faster than Garchomp, switch out.
  • For 6th generation games, have your Garchomp hold a Garchompite if you want to Mega Evolve it. Keep in mind that only one Pokémon on your team can Mega Evolve in a battle, so be sure that it is the Pokémon on your team that you want to Mega Evolve during a battle.

Warnings

  • Sometimes Garchomp may be KOed (fainted easily) if you don't take care of its HP or if it fights an Ice type (4x weakness) or Fairy type (2x weakness).
  • Avoid teaching it two attacking moves of the same type.
  • Avoid teaching it special attacks like Surf. It wastes the high Attack stat.
