Remove Bees from a Tree

Learn how to remove bees from a tree. While this is a complicated type of job, it can be done with a little caution. This is for a tree that is going to be cut down.

Steps

  1. Obtain the proper bee garments for protection.
  2. Mix 1 ounce of liquid smoke in spray bottle. Fill up spray bottle with water.
  3. Inspect the tree to see where the bees exit the tree.
  4. Spray the entrance with liquid smoke. Usually two sprays is sufficient to calm bees.
  5. Cut about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} above the entrance and {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} below the entrance, so you would only have a log with a hive in it. Some people like to leave the log in their yard for pollination.
  6. Spray periodically the liquid smoke to keep the bees calm. Do not spray too much -usually a couple of sprays at a time will be sufficient.
  7. Move the log away from others or make sure no one is around.
  8. Start to cut the log in the sides being very careful not to go all the way through. If honey oozes out, the bees will get it on them and die.
  9. Cut sections of the log off and then remove the comb.
  10. Cut more sections of the log until the hive is thoroughly revealed. The queen is usually hiding in a back area of hive.
  11. Place a hive box there next to the log.
  12. Place the brood comb in the hive box with as many as bees as possible.
  13. Remove all of the other comb and place at least {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} away from the log. Allow the bees around to eat the honey. If the time is not in the Spring, you will need to feed your bees.

Tips

  • Make sure that you wear boots and your pants have a strap to make sure they cannot get in. If there is any way they can get in, they will and you will not have to guess. Bees often go for the ankles and head. Ideally, you would want a professional bee suit, because they are more protective.
  • Every bee hive varies in aggression. Most hives are docile, but sometimes a bee hive is very aggressive. In those cases, it is not worth saving the hive. Smoking the hive before you do the job usually will calm the bees.
  • Make sure your bee garb is completely tight.
  • If the hive is above {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} off the ground, there is no need to remove the bees. At this height, they pose no danger to anyone -except in the case of homeowners with swimming pools. Usually homeowners with swimming pools that have honey bees nearby notice bees often drinking water from the pool. This can be dangerous for the kids. So, if you have no pool and the bees are high up in the tree, just leave them alone.
  • Do this procedure in the middle of the day. Most of the foraging bees will be away collecting nectar.

Warnings

  • Warn people ahead of time in the area (at least the neighbors on each side of property).
  • Work away from people!
  • Tape off area with caution tape.

Things You'll Need
