Remove Beetle Headlights
If you're experiencing headlight issues with your Volkswagen (VW) Beetle, you may need to remove the entire headlight and replace it with a new one. There are very different ways learning how to remove Beetle headlights, depending upon if you have an older or newer version of the VW Beetle. Before you begin, you should first check the fuses and try to replace the bulb. Doing these tasks first could save you a lot of time in the long run.

How to Remove Beetle Headlights: Old Version 1949 to 1966
- Disconnect the negative battery cable to eliminate the risk of electrical shock. Sometimes battery cable colors vary, but normally you will find that the red battery cable is positive (+) and the black battery cable will be negative (-).
- Use a screwdriver to loosen the screw that retains the rim, and then pull out the entire headlight unit.
- Separate the wiring connector from the beam unit, and disconnect the wires from the light bulb socket.
- Hold the lamp unit with your thumb to control the spring, and remove the lens-retaining spring. Your other thumb should pull the springs out of the seats.
- Withdraw the ring and sealed beam unit to complete the removal of old Beetle headlight unit.
How to Remove Beetle Headlights: Old Version 1967 to 1969
- Use a screwdriver to remove the screws that secure the headlight ring, and then carefully remove the ring.
- Remove the ring and the screws. Make sure you don't remove the 2 headlight aiming screws. The sealed beam will be held in place by 3 screws.
- Pull the wiring off of the back of the beam, and remove the headlight from the wiring.
How to Remove Beetle Headlights: New Version 1998 to Present
- Open the hood of your car, and locate the seam that is between the front fender and the nose piece on either side. In between the first 2 fender mounting bolts you will see a small knob. Push slightly while pulling the lever as far as it will go.
- Push the headlight from behind with 1 hand while the other hand is waiting to catch the headlight when it comes loose. Since the headlights are secured with adhesive, it may take some work to push it loose. You can also use adhesive remover if it is too difficult to push by hand. Use the paper towels to clean up any adhesive remover from your hands or the paint of the Beetle.
Warnings
- Make sure to use caution when removing the headlights from an older Volkswagen Beetle from 1949 to 1966. The lens-retaining springs are held with heavy tension, and unless you are careful, you might accidentally damage the components. This might result in having to purchase an entirely new headlight, which can be very difficult to find for a car that is more than 50 years old.
