Repair a Dent on a Car Using a Stud Welder Gun
Learn the steps to repair dents on a vehicle. There is not much access to modern day cars, which require tools like a stud welder gun to properly repair. Learn how to repair a dent the correct way.
Steps
- Clean the repair area with soap and water to remove all contamination. This will help eliminate smearing the contaminates into the paint or metal. Many car soaps are designed to leave the waxes on the paint surface. Therefore use a soap like a dish soap that will strip the wax and grease off of the panel being repaired.
- Wipe the repair area with wax and grease remover to assure that all traces of contaminates are removed.
- The dent must be metal for the stud welder gun to make contact. Therefore, remove the paint coating by grinding or sanding the surface to metal.
- Weld the stud nails to the surface that needs to be pulled out. Start by pulling what happened last in the accident (indirect damage) and work towards what happened first in the accident (direct damage).
- As you are pulling out on the lows, tap the highs with a body hammer. This will relax the metal and allow it to roll back to the desired shape.
- Pull the damage to the desired shape, remove studs by cutting and grind them smooth. Now you're ready to apply body filler to the repair area.
Warnings
- Be careful not to grind too much metal off or to get the metal too hot when grinding. A dual action sander with 36 to 80 grit can be used to reduce the amount of metal removed and heat to the metal.
