Sew a Scented Shoe Stuffer

Scented shoe stuffers have been sewn for many centuries as a way to rid shoes of undesirable odours. This is a great way to use up quilting scraps of fabulous fabric you just couldn't bear to part with. As an added bonus, you barely need to be able to sew to make these, they are so simple and can be hand or machine sewn. It is suggested that you always make a pair rather than a single stuffer.

Steps

  1. Draw a template from which to cut your fabric. The shape should be a little like a solid cream deodorant container - rectangular with a curved edge. See the photo for the shape.
  2. Cut out the fabric shapes following your template. You will need to cut four shapes to make a pair of shoe stuffers.
  3. Place the right sides facing together, with the raw edges evenly matched. Stitch the pairs together around the curved edge. Clip seams. Turn and press. Turn the edge under a small way and stitch sides.
  4. Trim the unsewn top edge with lace or braid if you like.
  5. Fill the shoe stuffers with a layer of polyester stuffing, a layer of dried, scented flower, another layer of polyester stuffing and so on until the bag is almost full to the top.
  6. Leave enough space to tie a ribbon bow and have a small top knot on the bag.
  7. Put the stuffers into shoes sitting in your closet to keep them fresh and odour-free.

Tips

  • These make great gifts or fĂȘte/bazaar stall items. Just be sure to label them so that people are clear on what they are to be used for, as it isn't something many people are familiar with nowadays.
  • Try to make a pair for all your shoes that are in storage for a season; they will come out fresher when you need them again. This is especially useful if you have to store your shoes underneath your clothes.
  • Use dried tea-tree if you are suffering from foot fungal problems. Tea-tree helps to ward off fungus and bacteria that affect feet.

  • Fabric scraps large enough to make each pair

  • Dried flowers that have a scent, e.g., lavender, rose, potpourri mix
