Sleep on Christmas Eve With All the Excitement

It's Christmas Eve. You can't wait any longer, you want tomorrow to come. You feel so excited, but, you need to calm down and fall asleep! Here is a good way to help you sleep before the big day.

Steps

  1. Stick to your usual routine. With all the excitement, try to make your night routine as normal as you can. Double check everything as well. With all the excitement, you may forget to do something important. Or you can watch a Christmas movie or two to help you fall asleep. Or a book would be better if you love books.
  2. Exercise throughout the day. Exercising no later than three hours before you go to sleep will help you sleep at night. [1]
  3. Don't play on the Xbox or any electronics such as PSP, PS3, Nintendo Wii & DS within a few hours before you go to sleep. It will keep you awake.
  4. Have a bath, it will help you relax. You will feel relaxed and it will make you sleepy.
  5. Have a nice warm drink. Avoid caffeine eg. coffee, tea, hot chocolate. Stick to warm milk or herbal tea. Don't have any energy drinks either, it will make you hyper.
  6. Relax for forty-five minutes. You can watch a Christmas movie or your favorite television show.
  7. Read a book before bed. Don't read horror or an action-packed thriller. This will make you feel more awake. Also, try to make sure it's not Christmas-related because it will make you more excited, which will make you stay awake longer.
  8. Go to bed at your normal time, because the day will feel like a normal night rather than a holiday. Example: If you go to bed at 10pm and your usual bedtime is 9pm, it will feel like Christmas. If you go to bed at your normal time, it will feel like a normal night.
  9. Don't peek through the lounge door in the middle of the night! It will only make Christmas more exciting. You don't want to see what presents you've got until the morning.
  10. Say to yourself, if you don't go to sleep, Santa won't come. If you are having trouble sleeping, do an activity to help you sleep, ex. counting sheep, doing your times tables in your head, etc.
  11. Make yourself really tired during the day. Exercise, don't rest and make yourself do more than one task at the same time. Ex. do jumping jacks while talking on the phone with your best friend, this way at the end of the day when it's time to go to bed you be so tired and excited at the same time you'll just fall asleep.

Tips

  • Don't keep staring at the clock. Take it down if you want.
  • Make sure nothing will wake you up early in the morning. Turn your alarm off and the electricity as much as you can. Close all the doors because someone may come to the toilet in the middle of the night and it will wake you up.
  • If you just can't fall asleep try playing a game that is really long like Monopoly. You will eventually get bored and tired and then want to go to sleep.
  • Listen to your iPod. Only listen to slow, calm songs, not the world's loudest rock song.
  • If you have an advent calendar where you switch the blocks according to the dates, switch it to a date like the 1st of December, or even November.
  • Get ready before you go to bed. If you go to bed at night and then need to go to the bathroom you have to fall asleep all over again
  • You could do a non-Christmas-related activity during the day, it also gets your mind off it.
  • On a normal calendar, you could switch it back a month or something. Avoid crossing off days til Christmas, but if you've already done that, it doesn't matter.
  • Try to keep your mind off of Christmas during the day.
  • try to get up early on Christmas Eve, then you will be tired and fall asleep quicker.
  • If you have a calendar in you room don't look at it, if you see that it says Christmas you will be more excited.
  • If you have a calendar in your room turn it all the way back to May or June to pretend your on that month. "Pretend it's hot out and that you can't wait till you go to the beach with your friends tomorrow" (wink) :)
  • Think of calm things. It'll help you to sleep peaceful and calmly.
  • Talk to friends during the day to keep your mind off of it. They are most likely extremely excited like you, so that's probably what they want to talk about. If you talk about it, and maybe open up a gift from them early, it will make you calm down a little bit.
  • Picture someone you don't like (such as a school bully) and try to think of ten things you like about them. It's pretty hard!
  • If you have a calendar in your room where you don't rip the pages off, set it back one month to November. It might help.
  • Read a book! Except something like a classic, not the world's funniest/most action packed graphic novel.
  • Drink a cup of chamomile tea, optionally sweetened with honey. After you drink the tea, take a quick hot shower or bath. This relieves tension and makes you sleepy. When you get into bed, read a calming book and avoid computer or television screens.
  • Turn on a fan. The white noise will calm you to sleep, and the air dries and tires your eyes.

Warnings

  • Avoid sugar! That keeps you hyper as well.
  • Don't drink lots of liquids before bed, you will need to use the bathroom during the night.
  • Don't have any friends or crazy relatives sleep over. They will be hyper and it may make you hyper as well.
  • Don't be naughty!
