Get Admitted to Texas A&M
Howdy! This is the official greeting in Aggieland. This one simple word gives you the sense that you truly are at your home away from home. Unfortunately, not everyone gets the opportunity to attend Texas A&M University. Admissions to the University are very competitive, but it is not impossible. This article includes helpful inside information that can help you achieve your dream of Aggieland. First of all, Texas A&M is interested in well rounded students that want to be at their school. There are several ways to be admitted into Texas A&M University as a freshman.
Steps
- Take all of the upper level classes that you can while you are in high school. Sign up for AP classes, and dual credit classes at your local junior college. This shows A&M that you are going above and beyond academically.
- Begin taking your SAT and ACT your junior year. If you do this, you will have a longer time to improve your scores. You can take the tests as many times as you need. All you have to do is send your best score. Most of the students at Texas A&M score between a 1600-1950 on the SAT, and a 24-30 on the ACT. Although these scores are important, they are not everything.
- Write all three essays. It's mandatory to write two, but they highly recommend that you write all three, so write all three! If you see optional on the application, then do it! Find an English teacher that is willing to help you make your essays the best they can be.
- Go above and beyond on your volunteer work and extracurricular activities when filling out your application. Begin keeping a list now of everything that you did in high school. Fill in all the spaces on the application, and if you have more information, you can send in an addendum. You also have the opportunity to send in letters of recommendation and a resume. Paint a picture of who you are for them. The high competition between applicant means that admissions advisors are looking for more than just good grades. They like to see that applicants are well rounded and involved.
- Visit campus! Go and take a tour and talk to an admissions counselor. There are also several conferences for students that can be found on Texas A&M University’s website, www.tamu.edu. Find one that fits your schedule and go. This shows Texas A&M that you are very interested. Make sure you list this at the end of your application.
- Do not wait to begin preparing your application. Take your time and do your best work, but do not wait until the last minute. Sometimes, the sooner you get it in, the earlier you find out the decision and then you can have a stress free senior year. Applications are due December 1st.
- Achieve your goal. If your goal is to be a Fightin’ Texas Aggie, then you can do it! Put your mind to it, and do not give up! Good luck and hopefully you are the next proudest member of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie class of 2018!
Tips
- Be an automatic academic admit. This is you if you were in the top 25% of your graduating class, achieve a 1300 on your SAT, or make a 30 on your ACT, have finished all recommended course work, and turn in all credentials by the deadline. Congratulations if you are in this category. You are pretty much a genius.
- Get in the top 10%. According to Texas state law, students who graduated in the top 10% of their class get automatic admissions. Do not forget that you must still fill out the application. Congratulations if you are in this category. Job well done!
- These are all ways that will most likely better your chances of getting in. But if you do not get accepted, you still have plenty of options! Texas A&M receives thousands of applications for a limited number of spaces in each freshman class. If you are not admitted they urge you to consider the following options:
- Attend TX A&M University in Galveston because it is the only branch campus of the Texas A&M College Station campus in the western hemisphere. After attending Texas A&M University at Galveston and completing 30 hours with a 2.5 GPA, students have the option of moving to the College Station campus.
- Attend Blinn College and transfer in the future.
- Accept optional offers. Some students are even offered the opportunity to do Blinn Team. This is where you attend Blinn and A&M at the same time. Take 45 hours at Blinn and 15 hours at A&M. After 60 hours and a 3.0 GPA, you are automatically admitted to A&M College Station your junior year.
- Do not get discouraged if you are not in the top 10% or automatic academic admission. You should try to stay in the top 25% of your class. Texas A&M takes your courses, ACT/SAT, activities, clubs, sports, community service, talents, awards, leadership, and essays into account. They want to see a well-rounded student. Admissions are extremely competitive. Review students make up 50% of the incoming freshman class.
