It is important to be able to pay attention to the roadways and know how to spot trouble while riding a motorcycle before you drive into a potentially hazardous situation. Learning how to drive attentively will allow you to recognize potentially hazardous situations before they occur.

- Learn how to ride your motorcycle safely. This includes being capable of handling it in all weather conditions.
- If you are not confident driving the motorcycle, then every driving situation will be a dangerous situation due to your lack of experience.
- Always remember to obey all traffic and road laws.
- Learn to identify potential hazards so you can spot trouble while riding a motorcycle.
- Hazards include speeding drivers, erratic drivers, poor road condition, bad weather, obstacles in the roadways, lane changes, merge lanes as well as broken down vehicles, accidents and animals on the sides of the road.
- Anything that is on the road that is not supposed to be there or is not obeying traffic laws should be considered potentially hazardous by motorcycle riders.
- Pay attention to the road ahead of you and behind you. Look for any potentially hazardous road conditions. (e.g. potholes, ice, puddles, gravel, ect.)
- Take measures to avoid the hazardous situation, including changing lane pre-emptively, falling back to get away from a reckless driver or pulling over and waiting out potentially dangerous weather conditions.
