Start Using Biodiesel Fuel

Singer Willie Nelson is now an energy exec promoting his own brand of bio diesel. His "Bio-Willie" - and other vegetable-based fuels - can be used in any diesel mobile. It's not the cheapest, but it's great for farmers and the environment. See Step 1 below to get started.

Steps

  1. Run straight bio-diesel, or use it interchangeably with traditional diesel.
  2. Mix traditional diesel and bio-diesel with no modifications. Diesel-powered cars and light trucks typically use 20 percent bio-diesel. Simply pour it into the tank along with diesel from the pump.
  3. Install a DIY conversion kit. The kits, which cost from $750 to $4,000, let your diesel run on 100 percent veggie oil as a separate fuel source. The kits (www.greasecar.com and www.goldenfuelsystems.com), include a second tank for the oil and a separate fuel line to switch from diesel to vegetable oil.

Tips

  • How it works: Remember the last time when you were using oil to cook something and accidentally caused a fire when a bit of oil spilt out and wondered why vegetable oil normally isn't combustible? Well these vegetable oil systems work by heating up the oil first, then sending it into the diesel engine of a car, making the oil flammable due to its extreme heat.

Warnings

  • Do not confuse "bio-diesel" with "vegetable oil." Bio-diesel can be run in a stock diesel engine, whereas pure vegetable oil usually cannot.
