Stay Up Late Without Waking Your Parents

Some nights, you just can't get to sleep but you aren't allowed to get up and watch TV, or use the computer. However, whatever your parents don't know won't hurt them, right? This article will show you all the tricks of how to make sure your parents don't wake up while you are staying up late in another room.

Steps

  1. Prepare your room. You probably won't be staying up the whole night, so prepare your bedroom for when you come back in. It isn't a good idea to go back into your bedroom knocking things over and slamming doors. So make sure that your bed is already made, you have already brushed your teeth and have pajamas on so you don't have to do all that when you come back in. Make sure that you aren't wearing shoes because they will squeak when you walk.
    • If you run out of room, hide it in another room nearby, so that you can just go into that room and get it. Hide things such as laptops, DS's, drinks, food, etc. in this room that you'd like to use during that night.
  2. Move slowly. If you are getting out of bed to go to the TV room, walk very slowly. After all, what's 5 minutes of slow motion walking compared to a whole night of fun?
  3. Close the doors. Make sure all doors in between the room you are in and the room your parents are in are closed. All of them. This will stop them hearing the TV and seeing all the light that is generated when watching TV.
  4. Control the volume. Keep the volume remote in your hand at all times. After all, if you were watching a quiet TV show then suddenly a bomb goes off on the show and makes enough volume to blow the roof off the house, your parents are going to wake up. If you know that something loud is about to happen on the show, turn down the volume.
    • Even better, just use subtitles.
  5. Prepare food beforehand. If you are planning to have popcorn and drinks while you are staying up, make sure that they are ready to eat.
  6. Don't try to start cooking popcorn in the middle of the night, or you might as well wake up your parents yourself. Keep all prepared food in containers or in glasses hidden somewhere, so you don't have to make noise.
  7. Keep the noise down to a low shout. If you are staying up with someone else, whisper when you are talking. Don't knock chairs over, drop the remote or try to break the sound barrier. Otherwise your parents will definitely wake up.
  8. Consider using headphones. This way nobody but you will be able to hear what you are watching. On the downside though, you won't be able to hear if someone else gets up. A solution to this could be to use one ear to listen in on your headphones and have your other ear open to listen out for your parents.
  9. Use the computer. The reason is that this doesn't create volume, normally doesn't need sound and you can watch TV shows on it anyway. Try going on the Internet and editing wikiHow. Also, you can plug headphones or ear buds into the computer or close the sound of your computer
  10. Be prepared to run. Have the remote with the off button in your hand. Keep your food in a place where it can't be seen. Don't leave stuff lying around. You should be able to push a button then leave and nobody should know you were there.
  11. Have an escape plan. Sometime in the not too distant future your parents will get up for a drink of water or something. Make sure you are listening carefully and if you hear someone getting up, turn off the TV immediately. Normally there will be a way back into your bedroom, like through a window, that won't involve you running into your parents. Watch out when climbing through windows. Your parents could assume you were doing something worse.
    • Getting in trouble for being up late isn't as bad as for sneaking out. As soon as you hear them, turn off the TV and get back into bed immediately. Alternatively, you could run over to the kitchen and say that you were getting a glass of water.
  12. Always remember that if you are doing all these things you need to keep the light off for safety reasons and so you can jump into bed quicker.

Tips

  • If you need to say something, whisper!
  • Have fun, because you worked so hard to get your night of fun.
  • Don't leave any evidence that you were up (like food, messed up house, computer still on, television still on).
  • Don't drag chairs when you want to move them.
  • Check that your parents are asleep before doing this.
  • Put something outside your parents door that will warn you when they are coming like a squeaky toy or a dog toy.
  • Try not to make too much noise.
  • Know where all the remotes are.
  • Try to watch things that won't make you laugh, it could wake up the parents. Also, don't watch a really scary movie, you don't want to scream.
  • Have an excuse ready, like "I lost track of time" or "I must have dozed off."
  • If you have pets, make sure they don't make noise.
  • Roll up towels and stick them under the cracks of the door so you can block any excess light or noise.
  • Don't try to throw a party. You should have figured that out already.
  • If your parents find things you've hidden (like popcorn or soda) act like you don't know it was there.
  • If you wear earbuds or headphones, use only one side. It is a bit annoying, but you need to be able to hear what's going on around you.
  • If you're using a computer or tablet (iPad or similar), try turning down the light on it.
  • When using electronics turn the brightness setting to low, so that the light won't be disturbing or evident.
  • If watching a funny show or movie and when laughing put a pillow over your face. If you need the toilet or want food/drinks remember what floor boards make a sound.
  • Try to stay in a spot where your parents won't look first.
  • Walk on the edge of the room or hallway and the floor most likely won't creak.
  • Don't ask little siblings if they'd like to stay up with you. Siblings will be siblings, and they will probably tell on you.
  • When you are watching a movie make sure, if you watch something scary, to turn the volume low and put subtitles if you know how.
  • Make sure to be prepared for when someone wakes up.
  • If you decide to watch Netflix or YouTube and you don't have headphones, mute it completely and turn on subtitles.
  • Bring a blanket and a pillow with you. If you hear that your parents are coming, and there is no time to go to the rooms. Turn off the TV, lie down and pretend to sleep. If they ask why you're here, say something like: "I could not sleep in my room."
  • If you have an electronic device and you're laying in bed, you can hide it under your covers.
  • Wait 20-30 minutes before fiddling around to make sure your parents are asleep.
  • Do not yell or scream if you get upset at your game.
  • Walk silently, crouched at 2/3 of your normal height, going heel to toe.
  • If you are playing online with friends don't talk loud keep it at a semi loud whisper.
  • Always keep your bedroom door closed, and make sure that if your using an iPad, tablet, or phone, get under your blankets or try to put the portable device under your pillow, so your parents can't see the light glaring off the walls.

Warnings

  • Some parents are very light sleepers. Or parents may be awake even if they appear to be asleep.
  • If you get caught you will probably be punished depending on how strict your parents are, so do this at your own risk.
  • If you decide to watch TV, be very careful. Many modern TVs will stay on for a minute after you turn it off.
  • Don't do this on a school night or the night before something important, unless you want your school results to suffer.
  • Losing sleep frequently is not good for your health. Humans need eight hours of sleep every night, so try to keep the late nights not too late!
